[The Word] Bobby Brown Returns to the Stage in Whitney’s Hometown ..

Bobby Brown felt all the love and support imaginable Sunday night in Newark, NJ, the same town where his ex-wife Whitney Houston was laid to rest less than 24 hours earlier. Celebrating their “Road To The 30th” anniversary, Brown and the R&B group that jump started his career, New Edition took center stage at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and it was quite clear that everyone was more than happy to see Mr. Brown back in his natural comfort zone.

Rusty from taking a few nights off to console his daughter through their recent family tragedy, Brown joked about missing a few dance steps saying, “I just can’t leave the stage!”

As the group performed a near 2 hour long list of 1980’s and 1990’s chart toppers, backed by a live band, the reunited original “boy-band” soaked in adulation from faithful fans, some who traveled over 100 miles to see their favorite group. One fan, Halimah, of Philadelphia, PA says being at the show fulfilled her childhood fantasy and brought her “back to a place of innocence.” Before concluding the evening’s show the group took time to express their appreciation for fans support and prayers after the final song of the night, appropriately titled, “Home Again”. While greeting fans individually and posing for photos, group member, Michael Bivins asked for continued prayer on behalf of the group.

Back at full strength, New Edition seemed poised to solidify their place in music history, and if the words of Bobby Brown prove to be true, “this is only the beginning.” Special Thanks to The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) for putting together a great show!

[The Word] Aretha Franklin calls in sick for Whitney’s Funeral, but performs the same night…

I was pretty sad when Aretha Franklin decided to skip Whitney Houston‘s funeral on Saturday. I was looking forward to her tribute and YES, I did give a slight *side-eye* when she didn’t show up. I mean, who misses the funeral of a good friend? But then I realized that it must have been pretty bad for her to miss it. Aretha contributed her absence from the funeral to ‘leg spasms’, ok fine. But then I heard she was she was skipping across the stage at her show later that night at Radio Music Hall.

She states,

Regretfully, I am so sorry that I was unable to be with you at Whitney’s service today. I had every intention of being there. But unfortunately I had terrible leg spasms and locked leg muscles until 4:00AM this morning following my concert last night, which I’ve been having for the last few days. I feel it necessary and very important to stay off my leg today as much as possible until concert time this evening. My heart goes out to my dear friend Cissy, Dionne, Bobbi Kristina and the rest of the family. May God keep them all.

Granted she was getting a check for Saturday evening’s concert, New Jersey is not that far from where her concert took place.

I’m just sayin’ …

A Letter To Whitney …

I wish that I had been blessed to tell this story to the late great Whitney Houston, but I have been blessed with an amazing blog with an amazing readership who wouldn’t mind me speaking on my personal life for a few minutes.

Mrs. Houston,

When ‘I will always love you’ came out, I thought it was thee most beautiful song I had ever heard. I played it 24/7! Back then I had a walkman and I was transitioning to a newer one, so I gave the old one to my Mom. My Mom was battling alcoholism at the time and I gave her everything I could to stop her from drinking. I was a kid who loved his Momma. She took the Walkman and I gave her a single cassette. Whitney Houston’s ‘I will always love you’. Cause she LOVED her some Whitney … She played that song just as much as I did, because when she heard it, she thought of me. One day she was walking home in the rain. No umbrella. A severe down pour with the walkman blasting ‘I will Always Love you’ in her ear. She stood in front of our old house on Greene Avenue for about an hour, just listening to that song on repeat. Drenched. Listening. Crying. The next day my Mom entered an alcohol rehabilitation in-patient program. She’s been sober every since. That was 1993. Music is a powerful tool. And Whitney was an angel who God used to help my Mom break her addiction.

I don’t know where my Mom would be right now if it were not for that moment and this song.

I’ll will sincerely always love the angel that was Whitney Houston.

I love you Whitney.

Executive Producer of the Grammy Awards, Ken Erlich, announced just a while ago that Jennifer Hudson will indeed perform a tribute to Whitney Houston during tomorrow night’s big show.

No show details have been released, but Ken did say that it is simply too early for a full out large scale tribute outside

Whitney’s body was still in the fourth floor hotel suite until around 11pm last night. The body was carried out on a gurney while Clive Davis’s Grammy pre- party was still going on in the hotel.  The Pre-Grammy party was originally cancelled after the news of Whitney’s death, it went on as planned with Clive Davis saying, “Whitney would have wanted the music to go on and her family asked that we carry on”
