In April, Mattel launched it’s Sheroes collection of Barbies, which celebrates powerful women who have inspired young women by breaking boundaries. Included in the collection was a doll depicting the beautiful Ava DuVernay, director of the critically acclaimed film Selma.
FYI; DuVernay won the Best Director Prize for her second feature film Middle of Nowhere, becoming the first African-American woman to win the award. For her work in Selma, DuVernay is the first black woman director to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award. With Selma, she is also the first black woman director to have their film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. [Wikipedia.org]
Just in time for the holiday season, DuVernay’s doll will go on sale TODAY and can be purchased on the Barbie Collection site. The doll wasn’t originally going to be mass-produced, but DuVernay’s fans spoke out relentlessly through social media and other platforms and Mattel listened.
