CASSIUS Releases June Digital Cover ‘The First Supper’ featuring “30 Unapologetics”

On the heels of its inaugural “Culture Vultures” digital cover, CASSIUS — the latest brand from iONE Digital (formerly Interactive One) and the definitive digital destination for urban millennials – has announced its June 2017 cover: The First Supper.

‘The First Supper,’ a graphic illustration featuring 30 of the most talked-about, controversial figures in pop culture and American history, is divided into four covers featuring distinct groups of ‘Unapologetics’-cultural disruptors as they are known in the CASSIUS world. The series features critical essays penned by CASSIUS top editors and on video, extended conversation about the covers’ ultimate message and the sheer power of its many subjects.

The June cover is in keeping with CASSIUS’ mission to cut through today’s headlines with stories and critical commentary that are relevant to millennials and directly address the global impact of Black culture. Each month, CASSIUS will create original covers underscoring their unique point of view on themes such as power, identity, and race. Video content will accompany each cover.

“This month, we wanted to nod to ‘The Unapologetics’ of then and now,” says CASSIUS creator Kierna Mayo, SVP, Content and Brands at iONE Digital. “We determined that people throughout time who change the world and never apologize for it, fall into fascinating sub-categories worthy of exploration. Deciding which ‘disciples’ should have a seat at the ‘First Supper’ table was hotly debated in our office. The truth is, the world is filled with ‘Unapologetics’ -fearless individuals who push us to think differently and for everyone depicted, there was also the case for someone else. We hope our audience has the same endless discussion we did. Who really moves culture forward?”

The June cover art was illustrated by Mark Hammermeister.

At a time when mainstream media is dominated by political theater and extreme narratives, CASSIUS provides readers with a rare lens that positions Black culture as central to the world’s key issues.

Cadillac and The Coca-Cola Company are the proud launch partners of CASSIUS.

Work, Work, Work: Rihanna Teams with Parsons and Donna Karan for Design of Merchandise Collection in Haiti

Rihanna has announced that she will work with The New School’s Parsons School of Design, one the world’s leading art and design schools, Donna Karan and her Urban Zen Foundation, and Haitian artisans to develop a merchandise line for the singer’s Clara Lionel Foundation in Haiti this summer.

Parsons design students will collaborate with local artisans at the Design, Organization, Training (D.O.T) Center, an artisan vocational training center in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Co-founded by Karan, Parsons, and designer Paula Coles, the D.O.T Center is an incubator for Haiti’s artisan community, fostering innovation, providing resources and materials, and enabling artisans to scale their designs while preserving the wisdom and integrity of their unique culture.

The partnership — emerging from a relationship between Urban Zen Foundation and Clara Lionel Foundation, which have worked together on socially engaged projects in Haiti — embodies the collective mission of both organizations and Parsons to positively transform people’s lives.

“We are ecstatic that our students will have the opportunity to work with and develop a merchandise line for Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation, that, like Parsons, shares a strong commitment to creating positive social change,” says Alison Mears, director of the Healthy Materials Lab at Parsons who played an integral role in launching D.O.T. “Through this partnership with Donna Karan and Urban Zen, students will live Parsons’ mission, taking a multidisciplinary collaborative approach and utilizing local sustainable practices and healthier materials to create products that benefit Haiti and the Clara Lionel Foundation.”

Students will travel to and work in Haiti through Parsons Design Fellowship, a competitive program launched by Karan’s Urban Zen in 2015. Now in its third year, the program sends three Parsons students to Haiti for six to eight weeks beginning in early June.

Rihanna, who will be honored at Parsons Benefit, will announce the winners of the fellowship along with Karan at the event on May 22 in New York City. Karan was honored at the Benefit, a fundraiser for scholarships for Parsons students, last year.

Since its founding in 2015, the D.O.T Center has developed a training plan for educating local artisans — elevating local production practices, and helping artisans to develop their design expertise and create new products for market, as well as offering business services to a new generation of artisans. Parsons, through its Healthy Materials Lab, has advocated for the use of sustainable and local materials at the D.O.T Center.

New Music & Videos: Daley, Jill Scott, Iggy Azalea, Desiigner, Zayn & PartyNextDoor

[ione_embed src=https://www.youtube.com/embed/wpjFSZG7Rfw service=youtube width=854 height=480 type=iframe]

R&B hit-maker Daley is set to release his upcoming studio album The Spectrum via BMG. For his second full-length album, Daley draws on professional and personal experiences from the last two years, including the loss of close friend and manager Richard Antwi. With this release, Daley has unlocked the next chapter of his musical journey with renewed inspiration… and eagerly-awaited new music.

For the first single “Until The Pain Is Gone,” Daley teamed up with none other than the R&B queen Jill Scott to create a love song that reflects the bittersweet push-pull of being vulnerable in love.

“Having Jill involved is an honor,” Daley explains. “She’s royalty in my eyes- someone I’ve looked up to musically from a very malleable stage in my songwriting career. When I was just starting to understand how to put my feelings into song, Jill was one of a handful of influential artists who’s music helped me figure out how to channel that.”

Working with one of his greatest inspirations came about after Daley opened one of Jill Scott’s shows in London.

“She was really kind and encouraging and we stayed in touch,” he says. “In the studio writing this song I just had a feeling… kept hearing Jill’s voice as the song developed, like it was asking for her energy. I’ve learned to trust those gut feelings when they occur, so after a little hesitation I sent it to her for her thoughts… and was thrilled to receive a reply that she loved it! She took it and interpreted it in her own amazingly soulful way, and it was done.”

[ione_embed src=https://www.youtube.com/embed/LnIX69LKx1A service=youtube width=854 height=480 type=iframe]

Weirdo Workshop band Louis York is excited to release their new video “Hipsters”, which is featured on their new EP Masterpiece Theater: Act II . Also known as multi-Grammy nominated production and songwriting team Chuck Harmony & Claude Kelly (Rihanna, Britney Spears, Bruno Mars, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson among others), the duo wrote and produced the single along with the whole EP. In creating “Hipsters,” the guys were very deliberate about the theme of the single, which addresses individuality, bullying, and self-acceptance.

“As a self-proclaimed ‘weirdo,’ we wanted to create a song that the fans could relate to as well as address a topic as serious as bullying,” states Kelly, who continues “As artists, I think it’s also part of our responsibility to educate the public.”

In addition, the duo’s previous video “Don’t Play,” which premiered via Essence.com was added to video stations across the country including MTV Live, BET Soul, Aspire TV and Music Choice.

Fly Stream: Future Releases ‘HNDRXX’ feat. Rihanna & The Weeknd

future-hndrxx

As Future promised, he releases more music from his body of archives and drops a new project entitled HNDRXX. This comes just one week exactly after dropping his self-titled album.

The anthem-driven body of work includes features from The Weeknd (“Comin Out Strong”), Rihanna (“Selfish”), and more. With songs catered to the ladies paired with a more honest side, Future Hendrix takes a more radio-friendly approach allowing you to listen to the album all the way through; not skipping any songs. Standout tracks like “Damage” contains a sample from Guy‘s classic jawn “Piece Of My Love”, and “Neva Missa Lost” takes you back to the smooth sounds of Jodeci‘s “My Heart Belongs To You.” Overall, Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn has delivered his best work to date. Yes, we had to say his full name. It’s just that good. Truly LIT.

Kudos Future!
