MOONLIGHT’s Mahershala Ali Wins Best Supporting Actor at SAG Awards

unnamed-1

Last night, the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were given away last night and A24’s Moonlight received “Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role” for Mahershala Ali out of three nominations.
Ali, who plays “Juan,” a drug dealer who becomes a father figure for young Chiron in ‘Moonlight,’ gave an emotional acceptance speech about his conversion to Islam and humanity.
“I think what I have learned from working on Moonlight, you see what happens in persecution,” he said. “What I was so grateful about and having the opportunity was playing a gentleman who saw a young man folding into himself as a result of the persecution of his community, and taking that opportunity to uplift him and tell him he mattered, that he was OK. And accept him. I hope that we do a better job of that.”
Written and directed by Jenkins, Moonlight is the only release of 2016 that has topped over 300 Top 10 Lists praised by writers and critics nationwide. In addition to taking home “Best Motion Picture – Drama” at the Golden Globes earlier this month, Moonlight has earned eight Academy Awards, six NAACP Image Award nominations, a Critics’ Choice Award, four Gotham Awards including “Best Picture,” a National Board of Review Award and many more.

Fans can view a detailed scrapbook and testament to the film’s impact at http://moonlight.movie/. Moonlight is in theaters everywhere.

Notable guests included Touré, Bevy Smith, Shannon Lanier (Arise360) , Chuck Creekmur (AllhipHop.com), Blogxilla and Brittany Lewis (Global Grind), Danielle Young (The Root), Gia Peppers,Alvin Blanco (Hip-Hop Wired) ,Hip-Hop Gamer (Hot 97) , Shamika Sanders (Hello Beautiful), SFPL’s own Rae Holliday, Gabriel Williams and Bernard Beanz Smalls & many more.

Guests and the cast were treated to a three-course meal before the q&a with the cast moderated by Jasmine Simpkins (Hip-Hop Hollywood). To get things started Ali Shaheed and Adrian Younge spoke about the impressive hip-hop heavy score behind the show and even played an exclusive track from the show featuring Method Man.

The cast of the show then joined them to get the Q&A session started about the show. What was clear and very evident in the room was the excitement for Marvel’s first black superhero show. Among other topics touched on were as mentioned above the show’s hip-hop influenced score, the neighborhood of Harlem being its own character in the show, each of the shows characters themselves and more.

It was an amazing night and we were definitely honored to be in the building to be a part of such an important event in television. We got a chance to see the show in advance and broke down why we loved the show, and we are quite confident you will too.
