Michael Strahan Leaving LIVE! For GMA, Kelly Ripa Kept In The Dark

Michael Strahan is set to leave LIVE! With Kelly and Michael in a few months for Good Morning America.

The announcement was made an hour after Monday’s show and kept under such tight wraps that not even co-host Kelly Ripa was given a heads up. Executives ambushed Ripa immediately following taping, barely breaking the news that Strahan was moving on up before it became public. The face of Electrolux was reportedly “livid” and who can blame her; this isn’t the first time Ripa’s been scorned by a TV husband. Back in 2011, previous co-host Regis Philibin dropped the bomb that he was calling it quits to the TV darling 15 minutes before going on air.

ABC also released an internal memo revealing Strahan would be wrapping up his hosting duties by the end of the summer to work on GMA full-time. The former NFL player chose to be present when Ripa learned of his departure. Apparently it was the networks decision to keep Ripa along with other key staff members in the dark to prevent any leaks and Strahan didn’t get a say in the matter.

Ripa was noticeably absent Wednesday morning a day following the announcement of her co-host’s pending exit. Strahan was joined by Saturday Night Live alum Ana Gasteyer. He of course immediately addressed the news confirming that he is leaving the show and joining GMA as a full-time co-anchor in September. Strahan also took time out to thank the fans.

“But I do want to say to all of our viewers out there … four years ago when I came here I’m sure they were surprised. You still continue to give us your eyeballs and watch this show. Thank you guys. I couldn’t have asked for better fans at all. You guys are absolutely amazing.”

The guy with the “gap tooth” everyones come to love reassured fans that he isn’t going anywhere.

“I’m always available to guest co-host because I consider myself to be a part of this family forever,”

Strahan joined Ripa on LIVE! four years ago back in 2012. He became a member of the GMA team in 2014, appearing twice a week while co-hosting Live!

Congratulations to Michael Strahan on his new gig! We hope him and Ripa are able to mend fences, it does seem like his hands were tied.
