Fly Music: Jermaine Riley Drops New Mixtape “Midas Touch”

The latter part of 2017 saw Jermaine Riley hit the Internet with three banging refixes (the Jay Z inspired “Family”, the well-received, Wretch 32 co-signed “Let Me Go” and “For Me”, a stand out rendition of the Krept & Konan single, complete with a simple yet cinematic visual). Within two weeks, the singer/songwriter penned seven more songs that would ultimately make up his 6th solo project, aptly entitled Midas Touch, by virtue of his reputation for not remixing, but successfully refixing whichever popular instrumental he touches, making it his own with a brand new song. The mixtape and its campaign is yet another example of the artistic self-sufficiency his fans have become accustomed to, with him writing and arranging all the songs as well as designing all the artwork and promotional material.

Since being 1/3 of UK R&B supergroup Fun*dmental ’03 and the release of his first solo mixtape back in 2008, the growth can be heard both vocally and lyrically as Riley approaches the subjects of sex under the influence (“Move On”), having the willpower not to cheat (“The Reason”), and being openly frank about his sexuality for the first time ever on a record (“Thick Girls & Hot Boys”). The bedding for 8 of these well-written and catchy R&B gems is the recognizable instrumentals of artists such as Omarion, Dej Loaf and Jeremih, sandwiched between two fully original tracks, both courtesy of multi-platinum and Grammy-winning producer Swiff D (Chris Brown, Bryson Tiller, ScHoolboy Q), at the start and end of the mixtape. “Blue Peter”, which kicks off the barrage of infectious R&B bangers, sets the
tone of “real R&B” perfectly and features his 3-year-old nephew, singing along with Riley in the intro. The project culminates with the head-bopping “Busy Enough”, a song within which Riley complains about his obligation to make time for someone new, based on an irresistible attraction.

“At first, Midas Touch was just supposed to be a quick “Hi, remember me?” before I release the official album this year. You know, something to tide my supporters over, but their reaction to the singles I’ve put out and the snippets I posted on my Instagram have made me realize this project is a bigger deal for them and my catalog. It’s been two years since my last project and it’s definitely a great set up for the album, which is another batch on honest R&B music and I think it shows how I’ve evolved over the past couple years. I’m so excited!”

The melodic 10-track set, with its clever writing, lush harmonies, and Riley’s signature R&B licks is sure to please his core fans and reinforce the fact that UK’s unequivocal R&B Superman remains a trail-blazing creative and his pen is a force to be reckoned with.

New Music Feature: Jermaine Riley Takes On Jay-Z’s ‘4:44’ Album with “Family”

After a two-year break from solo releases, the UK’s indisputable Superman of R&B — Jermaine Riley returns with the catchy, 808-rich banger “Family”. The track samples Jay Z’s “Family Feud” and was produced by Birmingham’s own Gifted, who also has a couple cuts on Riley’s forthcoming sophomore album, following 2012’s critically acclaimed Hello Earth. Candidly touching upon the subject of marriage and building a family with the one he loves, Riley flows over the beat with his renowned approach, complete with quick vocals riffs, lush harmonies and a rap-like delivery in the verses. Unbeknownst to him, however, upon recording the song, he had no idea he was writing an anthem for those who want to take their relationships to that next level.

“All the girls I played it to were like ‘Awww… oh my gosh, that’s so cute!’ — which I didn’t expect, to be honest. As songwriters, trying to please everyone and keep our audience engaged, sometimes we dive into the creative process with the intentions of ‘I know this will get them on my side’, and I didn’t do that at all with this song. I just wanted to flip the “Family Feud” thing and just have a song everyone could sing and dance along to. But the feedback has let me know that the topic is way more relatable than I thought. I just wrote the first thing that came to me.”

Riley continues to live up to his superhero namesake by writing, arranging, engineering and designing the artwork for all his songs, and “Family” is no exception. The somewhat adorable cover art incorporates the digitally illustrated head of the first-born child of Jay-Z and Beyoncé: Blue Ivy Carter, a clear symbolic reference to the start of the celebrity couple’s family. Fans of the former 1/3 of Fun*dmental will be pleased to know that he has every intention of giving them more of what they’re used to when it comes to the visuals for this song and those on his new solo album, slated for 2018.

“I want to challenge myself, push for excellence and give my fans something they’re definitely not going to find from another UK artist. There’s no one here giving kids what MJ and Usher gave to me. That showmanship. I’m always going to try and pass that down and be that all-round entertainer.”

If “Family” is anything to go by, Riley’s new album will be filled with well-written, memorable numbers that showcase a more human side to the ever-creative R&B Superman. What’s safe to say is: Jermaine Riley is back!

Dora Martin Shows Many Facets of Love In “Another Life” [New Video]

Three years after releasing their seminal debut EP Coalition, which was championed by BBC 1Xtra, MTV, BET and Spotify among others, and birthed breakthrough singles such as ‘Skyline’ and ‘Soldier’, London-bred alternative R&B duo Dora Martin are back, and are proud to announce their long-awaited and highly anticipated sophomore EP Him, Her, Them, to be released on October 10, 2016.

The first offering from the forthcoming EP is lead single “Another Life” and its accompanying music video. Written by Dora Martin, and produced by SOS (Sons of Sonix), who have previously worked with the likes of Wretch 32, Stormzy and Tinie Tempah, ‘Another Life’ is exactly what we love about Dora Martin – relatable stories, impeccable vocals, lush harmonies and songwriting excellence.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Another Life’, DM confess:

“The concept was inspired by our friendship of over 15 years, and we believe this subject matter is relatable from both a male and female perspective. People who form close friendships are often initially attracted to each other, but it’s often a taboo subject that isn’t really talked about, in fear of spoiling a healthy relationship”.

Made up of two already thriving solo musicians Cherri Voncelle and Jermain Riley, Dora Martin is not your typical R&B duo. Having both experienced the roller coaster of the music industry – from major record deals to independent releases and everything in between – Voncelle and Riley have put their creative minds together, to birth something special, and free from any boundaries or limitations.

Their new EP shows the duo collaborating once again with Truth, who produced their debut single “Skyline”, as well as producers PRGRSHN (Angel,WSTRN, Rukhsana Merrise), and SOS (Wretch 32, Ariana Grande, Stormzy) who produced “Another Life”, with the duo promising a return to their signature innovative sound in the face of today’s music climate.

Combined with fan favorite and single ladies anthem “2016,” the Davinche-produced “Deadline” and the music business indicting “Formula,” Cherri has crafted a remarkable body of work that is impossible to be forgotten or ignored even in the least bit.

Cherri says:

“I want this EP to be a reminder to people, of who I am and what I do at whatever capacity, also for new listeners to experience an emotive body of work matched with credible songs and strong vocals”.
