Rising hiphop star Jay IDK teams up with The Fader for an exclusive look at his new visual for “Metro” which really showcases nothing but propane spilled over fire production. The lyrical banger is one of many from the DMV natives booming project SubTrap, which has already gained over 1.5 million streams and counting.
“With the rap industry becoming more and more oversaturated, the difficulty of breaking as an independent artist has been steadily increasing. Without a major budget behind your art, its safe to say that 9/10 you’re wasting your time and energy. That last statement is exactly how I felt as I struggled to keep my name relevant by selling weed to pay for my career, which was music.
As my notoriety and career continued to advance, my life began to be more and more difficult and the money made from selling weed became less and less effective. My manager of just 6 months, randomly sent me a text message about no longer moving forward with my career because he found someone else he felt was more worth his efforts. Around that same time my lack of transportation and not having a car began to take its toll as the demand for public appearances grew. With all the pressuring of the industry and life itself, I began to contemplate new ways to make more money. I started thinking about selling cocaine.
This song “Metro” is what happens when the music industry, Life struggles and the drug game collide simultaneously.” – Jay IDK
Jay IDK recently rocked the stage in Detroit Michigan, sharing the spotlight with Future, The Migos and Yo Gotti. Expect more shows and new music to come at the top of the year from the young spitter.
DMV Native Jay IDK linked up with Sway Calloway of Sway In The Morning for Sway’s Freestyle Friday weekly series. Over Phantogram-produced beat, the up and coming rapper murdered a few bars right in front of OutKast‘s very own, Big Boi, which afterwards, Jay received some praise from the veteran ATL rap sensation, Sway and Heather B. for his rap style, and execution. It was flawless.
In celebration of reaching over 1M impressions (according to Twitter analytics), Jay IDK decides to re-introduce the world to his King Trappy IIIpersona via the brand new single “God Said Trap.”
Produced by Top Dawg Entertainment frequent collaborator Skhyehutch (Kendrick Lamar‘s good kid, m.A.A.d city hymn “I’m Dying of Thirst”), University of Southern California duo Gamebrand and Jay himself the track serves as the second official leak from the DMV native’s highly anticipated SubTrap LP and follows the release of his well received debut The Plug.If you pay close attention to the bridge towards the end of the song you’ll hear the vocals of singer-songwriter Ash Riser.
SFPL‘s own Gabriel Williams recently had the pleasure of attending Jay’s official ‘SubTrap’ LP Listening Dinner, as the two met for the first time.
Gabriel says:
Jay IDK is the next-level up. His charisma, his vibe, his flow, his consistency of knowing the direction of his brand and sound; draws attention to his musicality. He has a lot to say and will jump ahead of the rap game in due time. He’s humble but his hunger for music speaks volumes.

The Subtrap King is set to provide his full Long Play on August 25th, which he is looking to bridge the gap between both the conscious and cool. #SubTrap, short for “Suburban Trap” is paradox for trap music with substance. Mixed by Delbert Bowers(Yeezus, Long.Live.A$AP, The Marshall Mathers LP2), the projects artwork was crafted by graphic artist Nicky Chulo (GoldLink, Chaz French, REVOLT TV) while production duties were split between in-house instrumentalist Lo-Fi, TDE frequent collaborator Skhyehutch (Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city hymn “I’m Dying of Thirst”), Tobari, GameBrand, The Glitch Mob, Noose, Mister Temptation, The Watcherz and Jay himself.
