CASSIUS Releases June Digital Cover ‘The First Supper’ featuring “30 Unapologetics”

On the heels of its inaugural “Culture Vultures” digital cover, CASSIUS — the latest brand from iONE Digital (formerly Interactive One) and the definitive digital destination for urban millennials – has announced its June 2017 cover: The First Supper.

‘The First Supper,’ a graphic illustration featuring 30 of the most talked-about, controversial figures in pop culture and American history, is divided into four covers featuring distinct groups of ‘Unapologetics’-cultural disruptors as they are known in the CASSIUS world. The series features critical essays penned by CASSIUS top editors and on video, extended conversation about the covers’ ultimate message and the sheer power of its many subjects.

The June cover is in keeping with CASSIUS’ mission to cut through today’s headlines with stories and critical commentary that are relevant to millennials and directly address the global impact of Black culture. Each month, CASSIUS will create original covers underscoring their unique point of view on themes such as power, identity, and race. Video content will accompany each cover.

“This month, we wanted to nod to ‘The Unapologetics’ of then and now,” says CASSIUS creator Kierna Mayo, SVP, Content and Brands at iONE Digital. “We determined that people throughout time who change the world and never apologize for it, fall into fascinating sub-categories worthy of exploration. Deciding which ‘disciples’ should have a seat at the ‘First Supper’ table was hotly debated in our office. The truth is, the world is filled with ‘Unapologetics’ -fearless individuals who push us to think differently and for everyone depicted, there was also the case for someone else. We hope our audience has the same endless discussion we did. Who really moves culture forward?”

The June cover art was illustrated by Mark Hammermeister.

At a time when mainstream media is dominated by political theater and extreme narratives, CASSIUS provides readers with a rare lens that positions Black culture as central to the world’s key issues.

Cadillac and The Coca-Cola Company are the proud launch partners of CASSIUS.

Ahead of the premiere of his HBO Special, Forest Hills Drive: Homecoming, Cole once again offered fans a behind the scenes look into his career with the release of the fourth episode of the Road To Homecoming Documentary Series.

In this weeks episode titled “Buses, Vans, and Trains”, viewers get the see the preparation that went into the creation of the emcees Forest Hills Drive Tour as well as commentary from fans, his team, and even his former landlord. Fans are given glimpses into the challenges Cole and his team faced that ranged from inclement weather delays, to sound ordinances, and time constraints.

Touring isn’t all work and no fun though. We continue to see the camaraderie that forms between everyone working on the tour, which isn’t just limited to the tour itself. Along for the ride, is producer Cam O’Bi who Cole brought on strictly for the purposes of making music. O’Bi briefly elaborated on his role explaining,

“I just jumped on tour a few days ago. I’m actually not joining it to perform. I’m not a member of the band or anything. I’m actually here to make music. Like that’s what Cole’s team wanted me here to do and he has a lot of other people here doing the same thing.”

Always keeping people around you solely focused on creating music appears to be contributing to Cole’s success. We see the talented rapper write a verse in 30 minutes and lay it down five minutes before having to hit the stage.

For his return to New York City we get to see Cole sell out the legendary venue Madison Square Garden. Once on stage, he shares with the enthusiastic crowd that he “remembers specifically” stating during his last tour in the city’s Best Buy Theater, that his return to the Big Apple would be at MSG; a monumental moment for the small town kid from North Carolina with big city dreams.

Entertainment Last Night in NYC

Last Night In NYC: ‘I Am JoJo Tour’ with JoJo & Aaron Camper at Webster Hall [Photo & Video]

Last Night In NYC…Singer/Songwriter JoJo blessed the Webster Hall stage in The Marlin Room sector with opening act Aaron Camper for the I Am JoJo Tour.

Opening up the night, singer-songwriter-background vocalist (Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown), Aaron Camper hit the stage to get the crowd warmed up.

The talented artist performed a few of his current singles (“Hypnotizing” & “My Heart”), while covering some classic hits like; Ryan Leslie‘s “Quicksand”, Boyz II Men‘s “Water Runs Dry” remixing it with Taylor Swift‘s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” — to current tunes like: Wale feat. Usher’s “Matrimony”, Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth‘s “See You Again” and so much more.

Aaron is just completely a natural talent!

Next up, none other than the gifted JoJo! With excitement in the air and screams from wall-to-wall within a packed out venue, Jo took center-stage and immediately took us back in time to her first self-titled 2004 album (“Baby It’s You”, “Leave (Get Out)”) — along with her second project, The High Road (“Good Ol”, “Like That”).

It was an amazing feeling as the crowd tackled every lyric as if both albums just dropped a day before the actual concert. Later, JoJo transitioned into a few songs from all three of her EPs/Mixtapes, adding up over the years during her tight label situation at Blackground Records, and lastly, gravitating to her current Tringle — a dose of 3-songs all at once. But not stopping there, the songstress even went to deliver her past Drake cover of “Marvin’s Room (Can’t Do Better)” and Jeremih‘s current platinum hit “Planes” featuring J. Cole.

JoJo also got personal with her fans, giving a description of what she’s been through over the years:

“I was depressed…So depressed. You all got me through it.”

She also mentioned how she’s grown into the woman that she is today. It’s clear that JoJo is back and ready to take the music throne.

The night turned out to be quite incredible as JoJo definitely left her mark right in New York City, once again.

Congrats to JoJo and Aaron Camper on a job well done!
