BIG3 Press Conference: Ice Cube, Allen Iverson, Roger Mason Jr. and more

Producer, actor and music legend Ice Cube, along with entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz officially announced today the launch of the BIG3 (www.BIG3.com), a new, 3-on-3, half-court basketball league that will feature some of the best players to ever play the game. Former National Basketball Players Association Deputy Executive Director and NBA player Roger Mason, Jr. will serve as the league’s Commissioner and President.

“The BIG3 was created as the ultimate basketball fan experience,” said BIG3 founder Ice Cube.  “We’re bringing some of the baddest names to ever play the game, and giving them a platform to not only showcase their skills, but to entertain their fans in a high-energy, physical and competitive environment.  As a diehard basketball fan, I personally can’t wait to see my favorite players back in action.”

The BIG3 will begin in June 2017, and will unite basketball greats and their biggest fans with an entertaining 3-on-3 basketball league played in arenas across the country. The new league will bring fans legendary NBA superstars competing against one another, in never-before-seen matchups and team pairings. Former NBA players who have officially committed to participate include Allen Iverson, Chauncey Billups, Gary Payton, Kenyon Martin, Stephen Jackson, Jermaine O’Neal, Rashard Lewis, Jason Williams, Bonzi Wells, Mike Bibby and George “The Iceman” Gervin. Payton and Gervin will serve as coaches, with Iverson serving as a player/coach – the rest are confirmed to play.

The BIG3 will comprise eight teams of five players, one head coach, and one assistant coach. Regular season games will take place each Saturday from June 24 through August 12, with playoff games played on August 19 and 26. The BIG3 will take place each week in a different arena and city across the country, with all four games happening on the same day in the same venue, creating the excitement of a Final Four or All-Star Game atmosphere.

“The BIG3 puts a special emphasis on the players, and they are an integral part of its function,” said Mason, Jr. “From the coaching, to the team selection and the games themselves – the league is player powered.  We’re excited for the players to have such an active role in the BIG3 and look forward to a successful partnership.”

The BIG3’s weekly festivals will be among the most exciting sports atmospheres in the world by intertwining competitive games featuring basketball legends and superstar entertainment and halftime shows. Adding to the highly energetic games will be individualized music and introductions and fan interaction with players and exhibits before and after the games.

“Three-on-three basketball is the most played sport in the world.  It is a universally beloved form of basketball that truly highlights a player’s technical skill set,” said BIG3 founder Kwatinetz. “The BIG3 will bring our favorite basketball stars to one of the most popular forms of the sport. The league promises to deliver fun, exciting and fast-paced basketball played by some of the game’s most talented players.”

Games will be played up to 60 points, with the first team to reach the 60-point mark the winner. Halftime will take place when the first team reaches 30 points.

BIG3 will introduce into play a 4-point shot with three 4-point circles beyond the 3-point line. Players can shoot for four points by touching any part of the circle.

Designed as a player-centric league, BIG3 will feature 40 players, with the players earning a 52 percent revenue share. The revenue split will be determined by the final league standings, including postseason results in order to maximize competitiveness between the teams.

Players will operate their teams, with a Player Captain designated to make personnel decisions. All coaches will be former NBA players.

Watch As Ice Cube and Charlie Day Are Set To Square Off In The New Hilarious Trailer For ‘Fist Fight’

Ever wondered what it would be like if your teachers met up in the schoolyard or in this case the parking lot to shoot the fair one? Well wonder no more cause the comedy Fist Fight starring Charlie Day and Ice Cube answers that question.

In the Richie Keen directed film we follow mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Charlie Day) who is just trying to make it through the last day of school. Andy throughout the school year managed to keep it together in the midst of dealing with senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts. He runs into a scary adversary in the form of his fellow colleague Ron Strickland (Ice Cube) who is a no-nonsense teacher.

Andy snitches on Ron and you know what that means it’s time for some stitches. Ron challenges poor Andy to good old fashion fist fight. News about the fight spreads quickly around the school and now Andy must prepare for what looks to be one of the biggest fights of his adult life.

Fist Fight also stars Tracy Morgan (30 Rock) who is making his return to the big screen since his tragic accident, Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street), Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Dennis Haysbert (The Unit) and JoAnna Garcia Swisher (The Astronaut Wives Club).

Fly Review: Barbershop: The Next Cut

tumblr_static_401kh752d7ac0owo88o88s08s (1)

It’s time to head back to Calvin’s for a fresh-cut and hilarious banter in BarberShop: The Next Cut. Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Eve and Anthony Anderson return along with newcomers to the franchise Common, Nicki Minaj, Regina Hall, J.B. Smoove, Margot Bingham and Lamorne Morris.

Rashad, Eddie and Calvin VIa: Warner Brothers

It’s been 10 plus years since we last visited the iconic barbershop located on the South Side of Chicago. The once male dominated sanctuary is now a unisex salon headed by Angie (Regina Hall) who is Calvin’s business partner. Calvin’s motley crew of barbers consist of old man Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), Rashad (Common), Jerrod (Lamorne Morris), Raja (Utkarsh Ambudkar), Terri (Eve) and man of many occupations One-Stop (JB Smoove).

Angie leads of a group of feisty hair technicians, Draya (Nicki Minaj), and Bree (Margot Bingham). The new dynamic in the shop makes for some interesting banter between the opposite sexes as they comically debate topics such as Obama, Instagram Ho’s, and today’s vernacular such as term “on fleek” which Eddie makes light of.

Things also do get serious in the Malcolm D.Lee directed film when the topics of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and other recent issues affecting black communities are brought up. Calvin’s is now in the safe-haven of the neighborhood thanks to a new political measure introduced and backed by former Barber now politician Jimmy (Sean Patrick Thomas) to help counteract all of the gang violence going on in the neighborhood. Jimmy’s idea isn’t met with the acceptance he would like leading to the barbers coming up with the idea to for the barbershop to become a safe-zone for 48hrs initiating a truce between rival gangs. Anyone who visits the shop during that time gets free haircuts or their hair did. Jerrod gets a hashtag going on Twitter to help spread the word about the ceasefire and helps get things in motion.

Jalen and Calvin VIa: Warner Brothers

The main story in the film revolves around Calvin and his son Jalen (Michael Rainy Jr.) and Calvin doing whatever it takes to keep his son out of trouble. Jalen becomes friends with Kenny who is the son Rashad and the two get involved with a local gang ran by Yummy (Tyga) don’t ask us why a gang leader’s name is Yummy. Calvin and his wife can’t believe their son’s recent behavior is of his own accord after Jalen gets in trouble at school. Calvin immediately feels that Jalen’s behavior is the direct result of hanging out with Kenny who is a known troublemaker and recently moved in with his dad Rashad and step-mom Terri. Calvin’s accusations lead to a rift between him and Rashad, Calvin fearing for his son’s life decides to look for a shop in a safer neighborhood leaving the rest of his employees to figure  it out for themselves.

Rashad is also dealing with some family issues as well. Terri is now a celebrity stylist and her work keeps her very busy and keeps her from being home with Rashad.

The tension between the two is noticed by Draya who looks step in and make things interesting for Rashad. This sets up an interesting dynamic between the two leading ladies of hip-hop in the film.

Thanks to writers Kenya Barrish (black-ish) and Tracy Oliver, The Next Cut perfectly blends laugh out loud moments with serious tones. We do wish Nicki’s character was bit more stronger but she does make the most of her screen-time when she gets it. Regina Hall does a masterful job as Calvin’s business partner and shines when things get serious in the film. Common and Cube work well together in the film and of course Cedric shines as Eddie supplying much of the films comic relief.

Barbershop: The Next Cut is the perfect film for the family to go see as a whole or great option for date night.
