EBONY to Release President Obama Commemorative Issue

unnamed-10

To mark the political ascent and enduring legacy of President Barack H. Obama, EBONY has published a special commemorative edition, Hail to the Chief: Saluting Eight Years of Excellence. This stylish, thought-provoking issue (83 pages; $10.99) is a unique collection of exclusive photographs, archival EBONY articles and hard-hitting analyses from leading African-American writers including award-winning poet, author and civil rights activist, Nikki Giovanni; MSNBC award-winning journalist Joy-Ann Reid; culturally astute critic Eric Deggans; pop culture pundit Touré; and New York Times best-selling author Baratunde Thurston.

“Our readers know the utter importance of simple images of Obama and the first family in a White House that had been very literal with respect to its previous inhabitants,” says Kyra Kyles, editor-in-chief of EBONY.  “But our team went well beyond the aesthetics and recruited the most sought-after Black thought leaders to candidly discuss the social context around his administration, his achievements over two terms and the impact he will have as our first but hopefully not our last.”

EBONY’s commemorative special commemorative edition will be available December 20 for purchase on newsstands only.

EBONY Magazine Features Kevin Hart Talking Moguldom, Relationships and Race

kevin-hart-ebony

Kevin Hart rakes in millions touring the world doing stand-up and dominates the box office with his films. The secret to his success is … well, it’s no secret. Whether spitting bars as satirical battle rapper “Chocolate Droppa” or doing viral dances for the “Gram,” Hart knows how to keep us entertained. But he’s dead serious when it comes to his empire, and he’s become the first comedian to unseat Jerry Seinfeld at the top of Forbes’ highest-paid celebrities list.

EBONY goes one-on-one with the mogul to learn more about the challenges he faced during his climb to the top; the importance he places on marriage and being a family man; and his upcoming stand-up comedy film, KEVIN HART: WHAT NOW? Hart also opens up on hot topics including why he isn’t more outwardly “political” during a time when many celebrities are taking sides in the #allivesmatter and #blacklivesmatter debate.

“I love my people.  I have never not stood by my people and by my race. I love representing my race all over the world at the highest level where people have to look and go, ‘Hey man, that strong Black man right there is a smart individual. He’s got it together; he’s trying to do some positive things.”

Speaking of positivity, the 2016 Men’s Issue is specifically devoted to uplifting Black men.

“This is one of my favorite editions of the year because we shine a much-needed spotlight on the upcoming November election as well as the issues affecting a group of human beings I truly love: Black men,” explains EBONY Editor-in-Chief and Senior Vice President, Head of Digital Editorial Kyra Kyles.  “We are so tired of reading negative stories about our brothers, fathers, husbands, sons, cousins and friends, so this issue highlights awe-inspiring gentlemen making a positive change in their communities and offers self-care tips specific to the fellas.”

In addition to the articles on Hart, Idris Elba and Issa Rae, readers will find a comprehensive voters guide; a 20-year retrospective on the debut albums of Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown; and an in-depth interview with Abraham Bolden, the first Black Secret Service agent to protect a U.S. president .

[Fly-LIGHTs] Brandy & Monica ROCK Ebony Magazine’s Music Issue …

Can you say#BOOM

Fly Girls, Brandy & Monica have been chosen to cover the Music Issue of Ebony Magazine’s June 2012 Issue.

The styling is completely on point as the ladies give you SPRING in a solid color blocking moment.

#WeLike

Step into a few excerpts …

Brandy On Her Boyfriend Ryan
I wish we were engaged. He’s taking a little long on the ring side of things, but I’m patient.  I wanted to impress him. I wanted him to be proud of me; I was inspired by him. So making the record and his being there, it’s just all a part of it. Him and my daughter. I want him to love my songs. I want him to love my voice.

On Her Brother Ray J
I know who he is. And I”m pissed off about some of the things I’ve been hearing. It really bothers me that [those are] the kind of things that people do for money.

He’s misunderstood. It’s one thing to have this image of [a ladies’ man], but it’s another to become this other type of person that they’re trying to make my brother out to be. I know who he is. This is a man who loves his mama and his sister and his niece. Ray J loved Kim Kardashian. They were irresponsible with their–you know–but he loved her. For five years, he was with her.  In his mind and in the world’s mind, he was in my shadow for such a long time. To watch his sister become whatever I became and to not have that same path or that same way it happened for me; to be called ‘Brandy’s brother…’ To finally break out of it, you’re going to brag; you’re going to feel something about yourself. It’s not coming from a bad place, and I can tell you: Some of the shoes Ray J’s walking in, you’d take off immediately. You wouldn’t be able to handle the type of shoes he’s in.

I’ll be picking up this issue in May, will you?

HALLE BERRY on MARCH 2011 EBONY MAG COVER

Halle Berry is looking #FLY in her all black everything for the March 2011 cover of EBONY Magazine. While she has on a frilly, lingerie esque black dress eating a fruit, she dishes on everything, including her daughter Nahla.

At SFPL we appreciate visuals that we see on magazine covers (and everywhere else) The simple background, the black lingerie dress, the cherry being chewed softly provide for a very dynamic photo.

It sounds like Halle’s holding nothing back when it comes to how she identifies her almost 3-year-old daughter with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry

On Nahla

“I feel like she’s black. I’m black and I’m her mother and I believe in the one-drop theory. I’m not going to put a label on it. I had to decide for myself and that’s what she’s going to have to decide – how she identifies herself in the world. And I think, largely, that will be based on how the world identifies her. That’s how I identified myself. But I feel like she’s black.”

On dating outside her race

“Well, first thing I want to say is that I’m very connected to my community and I want black people to know that I haven’t abandoned them because I’ve had a child with a man outside of my race and I’m dating someone now outside of my race who is Spanish and French. I have never been more clear about who I am as a black woman. The people I have dated sort of hold up a mirror to me and help me realize more of who I really am.”
