Fly Interview: LHHATL’s Kalenna Talks New Music, Writing for Artists Like Tinashe, Diddy Collaboration more

Kalenna Harper dropped by the studios of SFPL TV to talk her recent and past music endeavors, writing for artists like Tinashe and Monica, her upcoming EP Rose Water and album Black Orchid, plus much more.

The established music vet also speaks on the state of R&B, which she feels like is no dead:

R&B never left. I think that what happened was the R&B singers got caught up in wanting to do what Hip Hop artists do, beacause Hip Hop is “f**kin cool,” it’s a lifestyle.

Kalenna went on to say, that most R&B artists need to just go back to the drawing board, dig through the archives of; Jodeci, R. Kelly, and more. Praises: Tinashe, Sevyn Streeter, Ne-Yo, The-Dream and Rico Love for sticking to real R&B music, and writing great songs.

In Part 2 of the interview, She also reveals a new collaboration with her past Dirty Money cohort, Diddy on her new album project ‘Black Orchid.’

Wanting to be apart of the recent BET Awards 2015 “Bad Boy Reunion” performance, Kalenna also talked about the good ole’ DDM days and killed rumors about Diddy leaving her and Dawn Richard broke with no money, after the group split.

Dawn Richard breaks down another barrier by now being PETA‘s new spokesperson for Body By Vegan. She joins the small list of black women to head the campaign. Dawn is currently going on a year strong of being a vegan. The defining moment for Dawn was when her father was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This caused her to do some research and better her health habits in more ways than one.

Bringing her fifth visual to life through 3D digital form, Dawn Richard not only tackles new visual worlds with “Calypso” but she also introduces her new visual with a new name, DΔWN.

“I’m just letting go of my last name … It’s time”, she says.

And of course, Dawn doesn’t disappoint. The visual was directed by Kytten Janae, one of the best digital GiF artists out today.

DΔWN speaks on the inspiration behind the video:

Calypso was a nymph in Greek mythology, who lived on the island of Ogygia, where she detained Odysseus for several years. We wanted to capture her essence in the video virtually.

The 9th Ward Princess, Dawn Richard reps for New Orleans on the Swagg R’Celious-produced bounce track “New Or Lean.”

Dawn’s January album release of Blackheart has been topping the charts and receiving major press, all while Richard has been going from city-to-city on tour promoting the project.

Soon, hitting the Jazz Café in London on June 2nd, Dawn will be in the UK streets on an international tour with the help of SJ Media Group.

You can always count on Dawn Richard for stunning new visuals! The talented singer-songwriter is back with another video, following up her last creative, “Tide: The Paradox Effect.”

Just dropping her new album Blackheart just last month, Dawn climbed the Electronic Charts, once again proving that she can hit the #1 spot, independently.

On the unrest subject of racial and political issues all over the world, Dawn’s visual is symbolic of her personal journey, and fight for artistic freedom, while touching on the worldly issues at hand. With the help of director Jayson Carter, she conveys a message of choosing self and peace, no matter what; through projected words and symbols.

Dawn tells SFPL:

“I wanted to convey where we are in the world right now. From Je Suis Charlie to Ferguson. Music should reflect the sign of the times. Choice is a powerful thing. What will you choose?”

In the song she chants:

I will never lose, I CHOOSE ME.
