SFPL Music: Common Reveals Release Date For New Album ‘Let Love’, Drops Visual “Hercules” Co-Starring Vince Staples

GRAMMY® Award-winning rapper COMMON will release his new album Let Love on August 30, 2019, his debut for Loma Vista Recordings.

Pre-order it HERE.

In tandem with this announcement, he shared his latest single and music video entitled “Hercules” [feat. Swizz Beatz]. On the track, he serves up his sharp signature wordplay between soulful backing vocals from Swizz Beatz. Meanwhile, the music video directed by Carrick [Weezer] sees Common thwart a convenience store robbery caught on surveillance camera—in between rapping into his iPhone. Vince Staples makes a cameo as the cashier.

[ione_embed src=https://www.youtube.com/embed/Xkec88cDuls service=youtube width=1920 height=750 type=iframe]

“Hercules” follows on the heels of the recent single “HER Love” featuring Daniel Caesar, special guest Dwele, and an unreleased beat from J Dilla. Not only did the song amass over 1 million cumulative streams and 339K views on the Savanah Leaf-directed music video within a week, but it also received widespread critical acclaim. VIBE called the song “a State of the Rap Union as he addresses the rise and expansion of hip-hop throughout the past 25 years.” Rolling Stone added that it was “Common’s homage to hip-hop”, and OkayPlayer professed that it’s “his most impactful body of work yet.”
Download “Hercules” HERE.
About the album, he shared, “This album is inspired by the book, “Let Love Have The Last Word” which gave me a path to write about things I had never written about before. It forced me to go deeper and because I opened up about so many things in the book, I was charged to go to raw, personal and spiritual places in the music. Production-wise, I knew that the music had to have depth, soul and dimension to it. I wanted the musicianship and the spirit of what live music brings, but it also had to have something raw and basement about it. When my team said, “You should do some music revolving around the book,” I just took that energy and went running into my artistry without focusing on anything else. No movies, no commercials, no parties (well, I don’t do that too much anyway) and I just worked on music. So this album is the culmination of this journey, this passion and this Divine Love that I have for one of GOD’s greatest gifts – MUSIC.”
COMMON will kick off his Let Love Tour, which starts in Denver, Colorado at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom tonight, and continues through marquee venues in the US and Canada before touring Europe for the first time since 2014. Special guests include Nicole Bus, July 11 –July 26, and Maimouna Youssef aka Mumu Fresh, August 7 – August 29. Each pair of tickets on the second leg of tour dates will come with new music—details to be emailed to ticket holders.
Get tickets HERE.
Be on the lookout for more soon!
The official digital and CD release date is August 30, 2019, with vinyl to follow on October 11, 2019.

FLY NEWS: Starz Developing New Series Based Off Popular ‘Black Samurai’ Novels With Common and RZA

Starz wants our viewership and they will definitely get after this announcement. Today Starz revealed that they will be developing an action-drama series under the working title Black Samurai with producer Jerry Bruckheimer  (Pirates of the Caribbean), starring Academy Award winner Common (John Wick 2, Selma) who will also  serve as Executive Producer under his Freedom Road Productions banner.

Wu-Tang Clan’s own RZA will also be in the mix to help bring the Marc Olden novels to life. Common will play the role of Robert Sand, a highly-trained American Army Ranger whose life is changed when he meets a legendary Japanese master who is trained in the ways of the samurai. He goes on a conquest for revenge when his master and his samurai brothers are killed by mercenaries.

The series will get a much need update from the classic novels and the 1977 film. The series is being toted as a mash-up of spy and martial arts  genres infused with heart, soul backed by the music of Common and Wu-Tang Clan.

Jerry Bruckheimer on Black Samurai:

We are absolutely thrilled to partner with Starz, Common, RZA and Andre Gaines on ‘Black Samurai. This incredible creative team will combine all of their talents and experience to bring the classic book series to brand new life with cutting edge artistry, music and imagery.

President of programming for Straz, Carmi Zlotnick on the new series:

We cannot wait for the world to meet Robert Sand – part Jason Bourne, part James Bond, and 100% the hero we need today. ‘Black Samurai’ promises to be an action-packed ride and with the Bruckheimer team, Common, RZA and Andre at the helm, we can feel certain this will be exceptional storytelling.

Common on starring in the new series:

I’m beyond excited about ‘Black Samurai.’ This is a unique and special project that offers something rarely seen in art and culture today. It’s an honor to play the character of Robert Sand and to have my production company, Freedom Road Productions partnering with Jerry Bruckheimer Productions, RZA and Starz to deliver something fresh and new to people. I can’t wait to dig into this character and the martial arts worlds of gun-fu, kung-fu, jujitsu and more. Look out world, ‘Black Samurai’ is coming!

RZA added:

I’ve been a fan of the Robert Sand character since I was a kid, ‘Black Samurai’ being one of the films that got me into the martial art genre. A chance to combine with Jerry Bruckheimer, Common and Andre Gaines to reintroduce this character to a new generation makes myself and my partner Mitchell Diggs at Wu Films super stoked. With the Wibbs leading the writing team and Starz as our outlet, I’m certain the series will find its fan base.

We are absolutely excited about this new series and look forward to adding it to our already crowded line-up of shows to watch.

Are you guys excited for Black Samurai?

J.Period, Jesse Williams, Rhymefest, Xzibit & More Join Forces for ‘Rise Up!’ [New Music]

From Marvin Gaye to Sam Cooke to Bob Dylan and beyond, Civil Rights struggles have a rich history of connection to music. So it is, in the spirit of that tradition, J.PERIOD and Jesse Williams join forces with artists from The Playlist Retreat to create a new wave of music for a new movement with the release of RISE UP! Music Inspired by the EPIX Original Series America Divided. The first single from “Miranda (RISE UP!)” features an introduction from actor/activist Jesse Williams, with rappers Rhymefest & Xzibit posing provocative questions about the state of our nation over a J.PERIOD-produced beat. “We’re pointing fingers at each other and we’re missing the point…” Rhymefest begins. Unity, not division, is the solution for what ails our country—a fitting message in honor of what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 88th birthday earlier this week.

Executive produced by Norman Lear, Shonda Rhimes, and Common, the EPIX Original docu-series America Divided features celebrity hosts including Jessie Williams (Senior Producer), America Ferreira, Rosario Dawson, Amy Poehler, and Zack Galifianakis investigating a wide range of social justice issues including criminal justice, immigration, housing and voting rights, and education. The series also forges the foundation of Jesse’s partnership with J.PERIOD, who composed the original theme song for the show.

RISE UP! pairs hip-hop icons including Black Thought, Pharoahe Monch, Posdnous (De La Soul), Young Guru, and DJ Jazzy Jeff; leading artist/activists including Aloe Blacc and Joss Stone; soulful voices including Raheem DeVaughn and Eric Roberson; and rising music stars from The Playlist Retreat including Mayda del Valle, Maimouna Youssef, Masego, Dayne Jordan, Stro Elliot, Tall Black Guy, POMO, and more.

“In the process of progress,” states Jesse Williams, “We are reclaiming our best practices, heroes, and nomenclature. I am a proud producer of the America Divided docu-series and honored to work alongside producer and mixtape master, J.PERIOD, in creating a soul-sonic experience that is both homage and inspiration to the critical thinking that undergirds liberation movements of past, present, and future.”

J.PERIOD’s most recent production, The Hamilton Mixtape, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums in December 2016.

Sir the Baptist Drops Thought Provoking Visual “What We Got” feat. Donald Lawrence

On the heels of his groundbreaking performance at Tidal X: 1015, that benefited the poverty-fighting organization The Robin Hood Foundation, Atlantic Records recording artist Sir The Baptist releases a groundbreaking message driven visual for his current single, “What We Got” featuring Grammy-winning producer/songwriter, Donald Lawrence. The track was written and produced by Sir himself.

Sir the Baptist joined contemporaries Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill, Common, Robin Thicke and more as his message-driven music has resonated in a true impactful way among his peers and fans the world over. Now following this paramount moment, Sir gives fans a new music video and a glimpse from his moment at Tidal X: 1015.

The music video finds Sir delivering a powerful message of faith and being true to one’s community and history. Baptist uses the music and accompanying video as a bridge for building a stronger sense of community for African-Americans, especially as it relates to economics. Just as every major community has a self-sustaining Chinatown, Sir believes that African-American neighborhoods too can work toward creating their own self-sustaining communities. This message of hope and harmony is reflected in the video, lyrical theme and artwork for “What We Got.” Ultimately, the song is really about taking pride and ownership for one’s own community.

Full-length debut project, PK: PREACHER’S KID coming soon.

Fly Review: Barbershop: The Next Cut

tumblr_static_401kh752d7ac0owo88o88s08s (1)

It’s time to head back to Calvin’s for a fresh-cut and hilarious banter in BarberShop: The Next Cut. Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Eve and Anthony Anderson return along with newcomers to the franchise Common, Nicki Minaj, Regina Hall, J.B. Smoove, Margot Bingham and Lamorne Morris.

Rashad, Eddie and Calvin VIa: Warner Brothers

It’s been 10 plus years since we last visited the iconic barbershop located on the South Side of Chicago. The once male dominated sanctuary is now a unisex salon headed by Angie (Regina Hall) who is Calvin’s business partner. Calvin’s motley crew of barbers consist of old man Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), Rashad (Common), Jerrod (Lamorne Morris), Raja (Utkarsh Ambudkar), Terri (Eve) and man of many occupations One-Stop (JB Smoove).

Angie leads of a group of feisty hair technicians, Draya (Nicki Minaj), and Bree (Margot Bingham). The new dynamic in the shop makes for some interesting banter between the opposite sexes as they comically debate topics such as Obama, Instagram Ho’s, and today’s vernacular such as term “on fleek” which Eddie makes light of.

Things also do get serious in the Malcolm D.Lee directed film when the topics of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and other recent issues affecting black communities are brought up. Calvin’s is now in the safe-haven of the neighborhood thanks to a new political measure introduced and backed by former Barber now politician Jimmy (Sean Patrick Thomas) to help counteract all of the gang violence going on in the neighborhood. Jimmy’s idea isn’t met with the acceptance he would like leading to the barbers coming up with the idea to for the barbershop to become a safe-zone for 48hrs initiating a truce between rival gangs. Anyone who visits the shop during that time gets free haircuts or their hair did. Jerrod gets a hashtag going on Twitter to help spread the word about the ceasefire and helps get things in motion.

Jalen and Calvin VIa: Warner Brothers

The main story in the film revolves around Calvin and his son Jalen (Michael Rainy Jr.) and Calvin doing whatever it takes to keep his son out of trouble. Jalen becomes friends with Kenny who is the son Rashad and the two get involved with a local gang ran by Yummy (Tyga) don’t ask us why a gang leader’s name is Yummy. Calvin and his wife can’t believe their son’s recent behavior is of his own accord after Jalen gets in trouble at school. Calvin immediately feels that Jalen’s behavior is the direct result of hanging out with Kenny who is a known troublemaker and recently moved in with his dad Rashad and step-mom Terri. Calvin’s accusations lead to a rift between him and Rashad, Calvin fearing for his son’s life decides to look for a shop in a safer neighborhood leaving the rest of his employees to figure  it out for themselves.

Rashad is also dealing with some family issues as well. Terri is now a celebrity stylist and her work keeps her very busy and keeps her from being home with Rashad.

The tension between the two is noticed by Draya who looks step in and make things interesting for Rashad. This sets up an interesting dynamic between the two leading ladies of hip-hop in the film.

Thanks to writers Kenya Barrish (black-ish) and Tracy Oliver, The Next Cut perfectly blends laugh out loud moments with serious tones. We do wish Nicki’s character was bit more stronger but she does make the most of her screen-time when she gets it. Regina Hall does a masterful job as Calvin’s business partner and shines when things get serious in the film. Common and Cube work well together in the film and of course Cedric shines as Eddie supplying much of the films comic relief.

Barbershop: The Next Cut is the perfect film for the family to go see as a whole or great option for date night.
