American Apparel Is Officially Closing Its Doors, Sold For Just Over $100 Million

Remember making a quick run to American Apparel to grab a quick tee, leggings, scarf, etc. was just the most convenient thing ever? Well, it hasn’t been for awhile as the company’s prices seem to escalate every year which meant less money was being spent in the what use to be the hottest retail store around.

Today, it has been announced that AA is officially locking their doors as the brand has been sold for just over $100 million dollars. The once popular company was purchased by Canadian brand Gildan Activewear and American Apparel is closing its L.A. headquarters and all 110 U.S. stores. With the business, shutting down means jobs will be lost. There will be a loss of 3,400 factory positions.

Founded in 1989 AA was always in the middle of a controversy because of its unapologetic racy ad campaigns with about 230 stores nationwide.

With two bankruptcies overall, Dov Charney‘s (Founder of American Apparel) sexual harassment allegations and more, it is safe to say that fashion brand will longer have to suffer and can now rest. All stores will be closed by April 2017.

Last Night In NYC, BET Digital held their first How to Rock Kicks event at Milk Studios in Soho, and Team SFPL was there to experience the fashion moment firsthand.

The fashion show brought together five celebrities to curate their own fashion presentation based around sneakers. The fashion show, which was live streamed on was meant to discuss and present the intersection of hip hop and sneaker culture. Hip hop figures and sneaker connoisseurs: Fabolous, Pusha T, Casey Veggies, Syd Tha Kyd, and Vashtie came together to present their different street wear ensembles that complement sneakers.

As shown above, Fabolous walked the runway along with his son Johan Jackson and Emily B‘s daughter Taina, as they paid homage to the 90’s throwback fashion trends during Fab’s segment.

Hosts Diggy Simmons and Tracy G spoke to each of the fashion curators about their inspiration behind the looks throughout the night. Sounds were provided by NYC’s DJ Brittany Sky. Not only did the event focus on fashion in hip hop culture today, but took time to pay tribute to the late hip hop legend, Sean Price. Along with the celebrity talent that made the show happen, recognizable faces such as; Mack Wilds, June Ambrose, Bridget Kelly, Mayor, Calvan Fowler, Sole Collector‘s Editor-in-Chief, Gerald Flores were also in attendance to watch.

BET Digital hopes to continue this ‘How to Rock’ fashion series in the near future!

From an array of soft, comfortable fabrics clad in polka dots, faux fur and elongated jerseys tops and hoodies, Vashtie once again, shows the ladies how to rock in a laid-back but yet stylish demeanor.

Vashtie recently spoke with about how the terms “Model-Slash-DJ” Should Die.

ELLE asks: You’re a DJ. You’re a model. You’re a filmmaker. When people say, “What do you do?” how do you answer?

I just say, “I’m an artist.” I hate when people—women especially—have to narrow it down. I don’t use the “DJ-slash-model” [label] because it’s so small, and it’s never the full story. I usually just say, “I’m an artist!” I make things. That’s pretty vague, but I’m in the business of making things, and traditionally, historically, artists did more than one thing. Warhol was a painter and a filmmaker. And people in New York or any major city, we’re all doing many things. It’s not really that unusual!

5 Things You May Not Know About Vashtie:

  1. She’s a Vegan (Raw foods only)
  2. Her name is Indian
  3. Her family is from Trinidad
  4. She worked in a Tattoo Shop while just in the 8th grade
  5. She was bullied a lot growing up for just being different and not interested in the norm

She’s our kind of Fly Girl!

Check out more of Vashtie’s interview over at ELLE.

[In Fashion] Are You Ready for Drake The Designer?

So I’m supposed to to wear something designed by this man?

This man in this outfit right here?

Young Money’s Drake has released the first offering from his new clothing brand entitled October’s Very Own. The offerring comes in the form of a Chilliwack coat, a collaboration with Canada Goose, featuring a buffalo leather exterior, silk-lined interior, removable arctic fox fur trim, and 24-karat gold-plated hardware.
The price you ask?
$5,000 American Dollars.

There is absolutely nothing about this coat that’s worth $5,000. And the mere fact that Drake would release a coat with such a ridiculous price point without merit shows that his clothing brand will run parallel to his fashion sense.

We’ll pass.
