Singer/Songwriter Kehlani has been causing quite the Tsunami ever since she’s hit the music scene!
Going from an independent artist to then merging a major deal (Atlantic Records) but under her rules, the vocal R&B princess was destined to be a star. Her deal was solidified just before the April 2015 release of You Shoule Be Here.
This week, FADER released their official Fall Fashion cover story featuring K Music titled Kehlani Earned This. We 2nd that!
Three years ago this 20-year-old singer was living couch to couch. Now she’s a major label’s brightest hope, learning how to lead while taking care of herself.
In the issue, Fader cover all basis with the rising talent like: being one of the industry top “Mindie Artists,” how a deal was offered from Chief Keef, Rich Gang, The Game sliding through her DM’s with a gym selfie, the debut of ‘You Should Be Here’ sold 23,000 units, according to Nielsen Music, on SoundCloud its songs had been collectively streamed more than 26 million times and so much more.
Julliard graduate and producer Jahaan Sweet who worked on Kehlani’s debut album said:
“The first time I heard her, I walked in and I said, ‘Who is that singing? That’s the best voice I’ve ever heard in here.’ She had good technique, but her voice wasn’t over the top; it was subtle and honest. Then I found out she wrote her own songs. I was like, man, she’s killing!”
Kehlani speaks on her creative process:
“As a songwriter, I break down a song’s melody, hook, timing, patterns, wordplay. I study Max Martin and shit. But now, I just focus on making what I make.” For her, crafting a distinctive sound and brand trumps any one big single. “Some people’s whole objective is to make money, and you can hear it in the song,” she says. “That’s never my objective.”
