Fly News: Salaam Remi Launches ‘Do It For The Culture’ Platform

unnamed-1

Salaam Remi’s label, Louder Than Life, announces a new music platform Do It For The Culture. The platform will release 50 songs every few months over the next few years. The current release features music from NO PANTY (Nitty Scott, Bodega Bamz, Joell Ortiz), The Champagne Flutes, Sex All Summer, Miraa May, Elle Varner, Mack Wilds, Miguel, and BJ The Chicago Kid.

NO PANTY consists of Bamz, Nitty and Joell who came together to do a New York style hip hop project  with a Latin twist. Champagne Flutes is a collaboration with the UK’ vocalist Terri Walker. She inspired a lot of Remi’s work over the last few years, from using orchestras in Prague along with Cuban musicians in Miami to create a blend of Sunday “chill out” music, which is one of his biggest inspirations. Sex ALL Summer consists of Salaam and a young vocalist from Baltimore. This project is “chillout cuffin season” music which is inspired by Marvin Gaye, the Isley Brothers and many soul classics but still at the same time living in our generation. Miraa May is a young Algerian-born London raised singer-songwriter from Tottenham North London. Her debut EP, N15, produced by Salaam and James Poyser is something to be reckoned with. Signed through Salaam’s publishing joint venture with Peer Music, Salaam has been developing Miraa for the last year and a half.

Louder Than life is not only dedicated to developing and finding emerging talent, but also partnering with forward thinking brands and relying on the street and people to help find different forms of talent.

“I have a sweet spot for singer songwriters and for people who make music that is outside of the norm,” says Salaam, “I will continue to provide that option for artists out there so people don’t feel as if they are required to fit the mold of today’s pop trends. I look forward to giving more artists a shot at doing what they do best not just for myself, but for the culture.”

Salaam is dedicated to artist development and making sure his artists feel special in their own right. Salaam most notably worked with Nas, Amy Winehouse, Fergie, Estelle, Miguel, Alicia Keys and he is responsible for creating and executive producing The Fugees. His records have well surpassed 1 billion streams worldwide.

Salaam also said:

“I get excited by the reaction that we got from people, which is why I decided to put out more music – for the culture.”

On the song, Derek Minor raps about remembering his roots and being thankful for his success.

BJ the Chicago Kid lends his infectious soulful voice on the chorus.

“We wanted to convey that down to earth feeling,” Minor says. “No matter how high I go, I got to stay grounded. We shot some scenes where I grew up in Tennessee. I wanted it to be a family affair with people I grew up with.”

Minor has been a fan of BJ the Chicago Kid since he saw the talented singer performing on BET’s Music Matters stage.

“He’s been the soul voice of our generation,” Minor says. “He’s so versatile. Plus, he’s just a cool cat. I love that about him.”

“Until I’m Gone” follows the new digital single “Look at Me Now,” available on iTunes, and “You Know It,” the album’s first single and video.

Sneakers as a Kid:

“Man I remember tryna get school shoes as a kid. It was a set amount of money for me to get shoes with. You know clothes, you gon…you gon get what you get, but shoes you had this much money. So if you wanna add and add to this to get something better than what you know you can get with this, then you do so. *pointing to sneakers* My first pair of Jordan’s ever. These are my first pair of Jordan’s ever: The Olympic Jordans. I had a choice to get these or the Air Raid’s as a kid, and I ended up getting the Jordan’s. That’s crazy! A lot of things I couldn’t get when I was a kid. I buy what I love now. You know? Why why why wouldn’t um a young man that can do. I don’t go crazy, but I have my fun sometimes. You gotta reward yourself.”

Check out the clip above.

Street life in Chicago:

“Some of my friends are you know still in the street life in Chicago and other places I just keep ‘em in my prayers. Having friends that did whatever they did in the streets and me going to church and understanding what that life is like too. I feel like the knowledge of both is what keeps me alive to this day. To understand something doesn’t mean you have to do it. A lot of ‘em um when I was a kid, and I tried to do whatever I wanted to do They were like ‘B man you rock with us, but you know this ain’t for you man.’ You know what I mean? They were very honest…and I appreciate that because peer pressure can be a lot or just pressure that don’t they don’t even know they giving you as a kid you know it, it could be a lot on your decisions um those decisions can alter your life. I could definitely not be here. Easy…easy…easy.”

bj-dangelo

With the evolution of R&B drastically prevalent, BJ The Chicago Kid is still inspired by the simple complexities of the genre’s traditional sound – and its artists. As today marks the 16th anniversary of D’Angelo‘s “Untitled,” BJ has recreated an ear-pleasuring experience of his favorite tracks from the incomparable album, including the title track “Untitled,” “Always In My Hair,” which also includes a mash up of “Dreaming Eyes of Mine,” and a fan favorite, “Send It On.”

BJ says:

“His musicality is beyond this world,” said BJ. “I had to celebrate his genius as he continues to kill the game and make great music. It’s a new year and there’s no better way to start it off than taking it back to where it all began for me. This is real soul/R&B.”

BJ The Chicago Kid will release his debut album early 2016, which includes his hit singles “Church” ft. Chance The Rapper, and recently released buzz track, “The Resume” ft. Big Krit.
