Spotify Premieres New Podcast Series Mogul: The Life and Death of Chris Lighty

Host Reggie Ossé (aka Combat Jack) tells the story of the music executive who changed hip-hop and shaped the careers of some of its most beloved artists: LL Cool J, Missy Elliott, 50 Cent, and more. With one of the most illustrious careers in music, Chris Lighty rose to the pinnacle of musical success before an untimely end. This story is broader than just music — it’s the story of the American Dream. The series will be hosted by Reggie and feature commentary from Russell Simmons, Fat Joe, Warren G, Troy Carter and others. It is produced in partnership with Gimlet Media and Loudspeaker Network.

Check out the new podcast HERE.

Series Description

Chris Lighty’s story is the story of hip-hop. His childhood in the Bronx was soaked in 1970’s hip-hop culture, the first electric moments of a brand-new scene. Lighty fell in love with the music, and soon he was carrying crates of records for the pioneering DJ Red Alert, and hitting the road with legendary acts like The Jungle Brothers and De La Soul. Then he became a hip-hop legend himself: discovering artists like Foxy Brown and Fat Joe, making the careers of superstars like 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes, and masterminding some of the industry’s most lucrative deals. Lighty was the rare executive who was comfortable in both the streets and the boardroom. But while he expertly managed the lives of everyone around him, his personal problems became unmanageable. And in 2012, he was found dead at his house in the Bronx, an apparent suicide that left the music world reeling.

Touching on issues of race, mental illness, the commercialization of hip-hop, and the price of success, Mogul: The Life & Death of Chris Lighty will unpack Lighty’s’ story in a 6-episode podcast miniseries. The project features interviews with Lighty’s family and friends, stories from hip-hop luminaries like Russell Simmons, Warren G and Fat Joe, and previously unheard recordings of Chris Lighty himself. It is hosted by Reggie Ossé, who comes to the project from his critically acclaimed hip-hop interview podcast The Combat Jack Show. Produced as a collaboration between Gimlet Media and Loud Speakers Network, Mogul will be released as a Spotify exclusive on April 27.

Episode One

In this episode, we meet Chris and his family and hear about what it was like to grow up in the Bronx in the 1970s. We also learn about a new form of music that started to germinate through park jams held across the city—the music that would come to be known as hip hop. From there, we follow Chris from the park jams to the emerging hip hop club scene, where he takes the first step on the road to becoming a mogul.

Voices: DJ Red Alert, Fat Joe, Jessica Brooks (Chris’ mom), Nicole Lighty (Chris’ sister), Darryl Thompson (Chris’ best friend), Chris Ali (Chris’ childhood friend), Dan Charnas, Joan Morgan, and AB Butler.

Episode Two

In this episode, Chris really kicks off his career in the music industry, road managing the Jungle Brothers and touring with them across the US. After a successful stint with the JBs, Chris’ talent is recognized by Lyor Cohen of Def Jam. The transition from scrappy road manager to hip hop executive is not an easy one, though, and to really succeed, Chris will be forced to leave his past behind.

Voices: Russell Simmons, The Jungle Brothers, DJ Red Alert, Dan Charnas, Chris Ali, and Chris Lighty.

Episode Three

In this episode, Chris rises through the ranks of Def Jam and has his first big break in the industry when he signs the then-unknown Warren G. Warren’s first album is massive and Chris is, for the first time, taken seriously as a creative executive. But he’ll still need his street smarts when an epic showdown with hip hop’s bogeyman, Suge Knight, happens at the climax of the episode.

Voices: Warren G, Paul Stewart, Russell Simmons, Dan Charnas, and Chris Lighty.

Episode Four

In this episode, we discover that being a hip hop manager isn’t all champagne, private jets, and 5 star hotels. In fact, it’s a job that’s incredibly stressful, particularly when you’re managing a number of temperamental and unpredictable performers. To make matters worse, Chris’ hot streak at Def Jam ends, and he is eclipsed by a new wave of executives.

Voices: Fat Joe, D Nice, N.O.R.E, Blue Williams, Sophia Chang, Kevin Liles, and Chris Lighty.

Episode Five

When this episode begins, Chris is at a career low-point. He’s on his way out of Def Jam and a number of recent ventures haven’t paid off. So he takes a chance on a controversial rapper from Queens who was, at the time, an industry pariah. That rapper turns out to be 50 Cent, and the pair make millions together through their Vitamin Water endorsement deal. But success in hip-hop is fleeting, and chaos in Chris’ personal life puts him back at the grind, hustling for his next big deal in the midst of a global recession.

Voices: Sha Money XL, Dan Charnas, Sophia Chang, Tiffany Lighty (Chris’ Daughter).

Episode Six

Chris’ life ends suddenly in 2012. In this episode, we find out the circumstances surrounding his death, and probe what actually happened on the day he died.

Voices: Tiffany Lighty, Jessica Brooks, Nicole Lighty, Darryl Thompson, Chris Ali, Sophia Chang, Joan Morgan, and AB Butler.

Soulja Mayweather aka Soulja Boy Home Was Burglarized Amidst Training Mode

As Soulja Boy is in training mode and actively busy on social media promoting the so-called fight with Chris Brown it seems that his house was burglarized. We wonder if Mayweather will train him to fight the burglars as well…

Image (3) Blankstare.gif for post 109767

TMZ reports:

Law enforcement sources tell us a man busted into Soulja’s Hollywood Hills home early Tuesday morning. After busting the front door down the crook nabbed $10k in cash and $12k in jewelry.

We’re told SB wasn’t home at the time of the burglary … but his house is wired with surveillance cameras, one of which captured the suspect’s image.

As recently reported, Soulja and Brown will be taking their frustrations to the boxing ring in Dubai. Chris is currently being trained by Mike Tyson.

The Game‘s manager, Wack 100 recently spoke on the fight with TMZ and says that Floyd and 50 Cent have to do with the alleged fight and that it is being completely controlled by West Coast gangs.

Thoughts?

Chris Brown Arrested and Released After Posting 250K Bail

Chris Brown once again finds himself at odds with the law. The Grammy-winning singer was arrested at his home Tuesday evening after a woman reported being threatened by him with a gun. Brown was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and later released on $250,000 bail.

The LAPD received a call at about 3 a.m. local time (6 a.m. ET) and several patrol cars were dispatched to his home. At the scene a woman, Baylee Curran reported an incident that occurred between her and Brown where he pointed a gun at her prior to her leaving his estate in the Tarzana community of Los Angeles.

Curran spoke to E! News about the incident where she described how events unfolded as they sat in Brown’s kitchen admiring some bling.

“I admired this one piece, a diamond cross necklace. I did not pick it up, I did not touch it, take it or grab it, anything to that sort.”

It was at this point Curran says that one of Brown’s friends confronted her.

“Get out, don’t touch the jewelry. [The friend] was calling me names and that’s when Chris Brown kind of went off, pulled out a gun and said, ‘Get the f–k out.’ He was saying, ‘Get the f–k out! Haven’t I told you guys enough?’ And kind of threatening me with the gun like if I didn’t get out he’s going to shoot me with it.”

Curran claims that it was then that she immediately exited the house before realizing she had left without her cellphone and shoes. She had turned her phone over earlier in the evening when she first arrived at the residence. According to Curran her belongings were retrieved by one of Chris’ friends to be returned to her, but the friend was hesitant to return her cellphone before she signed an NDA. At this point she claims she grabbed her phone, ran down the driveway, and then proceeded to hide under a truck because saw his vehicle heading towards her.

Prior to his arrest Brown took part in an hours long stand-off with police after refusing to speak to them. During this time the Royalty artist posted a video to Instagram voicing his frustrations with law enforcement.

“Every three months, y’all come up with something, bro. What is it? What’s going to be next?” At the same time, when I call police for stalker people they don’t come until the next day.”

So who is Baylee Curran, Brown’s accuser?

She is a beauty queen who most recently won the title of Miss California Regional 2016, but was stripped of her crown two months into her reign amid controversy.

TMZ reports that shortly after winning the title nude photos of Curran were sent to the pageant director. Curran adamantly denied it was her in the photos and she was given a second chance. However, Curran failed to show up for community functions and other events instead choosing to spend her time frolicking on a boat and working on photo shoots. It was at this point that Curran was dethroned. She has yet to return her crown.

Curran is also currently wanted for questioning in New York City. Back in 2013 while vacationing with friends at The Plaza an incident took place. After an argument police records state Baylee snatched a $1,000 Louis Vuitton purse from one of the girls and fled the hotel. The bag contained $200 in cash, credit cards, and a Michael Kors wallet. She was chased by security and at this point dropped the purse, but disappeared with all the contents. The victim in the incident was also successful in getting an L.A. judge to issue a restraining order against Curran.

Baylee’s reps claim she was unaware that she was wanted for questioning in NYC and that the friend is the actual thief.

Since his arrest and release Chris’s fans and several of his pals including 50 Cent and Ray J along with his attorney Mark Geragos have taken to social media to declare his innocence.

50 Cent posted the image below with the following message,

“I have a different relationship with Chris, That’s my boy. I watched him come up, a lot of the shit he go thr[u]ew is crazy to me. If you[‘]r[e] not safe at home when do you get a break? If someone calls 911 and says you pulled a gun on them in your house, are the police coming to creat[e] a bunker at the end of your driveway for 11 hours to wait for a search warrant? Then live stream it, This must be VIP Treatment. SMH”

Ray J chose to share a video message to show his support for Chris and strike down the validity of the allegations.

The LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division, which handles high-profile and complex murders and robberies as well as cases involving VIPs and celebrities, is investigating the case. We will keep you posted as details continue to emerge.

What are your thoughts? Do you think Chris threatened Baylee with a gun or is she just looking to get her 15 minutes (besides E! News she also sat down for a segment for TMZ Live) and a payout?

Not sure who to believe just yet, but it is pretty outlandish that the LAPD camped out at the entrance of Brown’s driveway for hours until they secured a warrant. Stay tuned.
