FLY Interviews: The Cast of ‘Sorry To Bother You’ Heap High Praise For Director Boots Riley

(l to r.) Lakeith Stanfield and director Boots Riley on the set of SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, an Annapurna Pictures release.

Sorry To Bother You is easily one of the year’s highly anticipated films of the Summer not to involve comic book heroes. Critics have been in love with rapper turned director Boots Riley’s trippy cinematic ride loosely based on his experiences as a telemarketer since its Sundance premiere. In the film, we follow unemployed Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) who quickly rises through the ranks of a telemarketing company when he masters the art of using his “white voice.”

(l to r.) Lakeith Stanfield as Cassius Green and Danny Glover as Langston star in Boots Riley’s SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, an Annapurna Pictures release.

SFPL’s own Bernard Smalls and other invited press got a chance to sit down with the film’s cast and director to discuss what is arguably one of the best films of the year. When asked what was one thing that resonated about this film for them the cast all agreed it was Boots’ story and his authenticity. Stanfield gets the Boot’s praise train rolling stating:

“I think the common thread here is this guy’s mind right here. He wrote some crazy story that like it moved us all in some way, form, or fashion and I think all of us to some degree knew it was an opportunity to, to embark on something unlike we’ve done before. Something really different. It was just a cool opportunity that Boots Gave us not only to explore this cool story, his mind, and give us the gift of his imagination but also for our careers to be able to stretch ourselves and get into this new world.”

(l to r.) Jermaine Fowler as Salvador, Steven Yuen as Squeeze and Lakeith Stanfield as Cassius Green star in Boots Riley’s SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, an Annapurna Pictures release.

His costars followed suit, Steven Yeun who plays Squeeze in the film added: “I think it’s the same thing. When you read a script that is this authentic. Anyone can make I guess a script that people haven’t seen before because you can just write a bunch of gobbledygook on it but Boots wrote a script where you read it, and you go this is something I’ve never seen before, but it’s also super honest in the way that it’s written.”

Omari Hardwick stars as Mr. _____ in director Boots Riley’s SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, an Annapurna Pictures release.

Omari Hardwick who plays Cassius’ boss Mr. Blank in the film had plenty of praise for Boots adding: “The hunger added to the brilliance that he put on the page and the story he had. To Lakeith’s point, we looked at it, and he was the common thread. There was hunger in Boots, so we also got on that train of hunger.” Tessa Thompson who plays Cassius’ free-spirited love interest Detroit raves about Boots making a fun film that still delivers a message. “I love making movies that are about something but I also just feel like, “How do we talk about old ideas in new ways? How do we make something that is vital and important and feels like a solvent but doesn’t feel like medicine?” And I thought that Boots did that. Making a film that is about something but is also just a fun ride as well,” Thompson adds.

Tessa Thompson stars as Detroit in Boots Riley’s SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, an Annapurna Pictures release.

The cast also spoke on whether or not they had to use “code switching” or in the case of the film “using your white voice.”

Lakeith: “There’s something I think unspoken in a young black kids household. If you want to go out and be something in the world you’re going to have to be white. Or you’re going to have to be whiter or you’re going to have to adopt something that is accepted in a whiter sense. And for little kids what does that really mean? And for little poor black kids what it means is that everything that you are and everything that you stand for is the antithesis of that.”

Tessa: “I felt, certainly early on in my career was like an expectation of like performative blackness. Why the hair color was significant to me, I recently had a conversation with a filmmaker about a role, and in the original screenplay, it’s written that the character I would play has pink hair and I was asking him about it. I’m not eager to have my hair look similar to Detroit anyways but I was like oh cool so what about this color hair, and he says oh that was when the character was going to be white. That’s when it was written for another actress. Which I just thought was interesting. The conversation is ongoing in terms of what this character will look like, but it was interesting to me.”

To wrap things up, Boots was asked what the one thing he wanted moviegoers to leave with after watching his film? His answer was fascinating stating he didn’t want viewers to exit the theater with just one message.

Boots: “I don’t want people to walk away with one thing you know. It’s kind of like what’s the one thing that you that you walked away from with Song Solomon or from Gabriel Garcia Marquez A Hundred Years of Solitude. I approach this in a way like a novel. With all these ideas I can tell you I have hopes and dreams for. There are some things that I’m hoping for more than others, but I want people to feel like I took so much from. You know how they have those movies where there is the one thing and that’s what the movies about and then they stretch it out, and they like damn I hope we can get 80 minutes out of this and you feel them stretching that out. That’s not this movie. I do hope overall there’s a feeling of that through the craziness, through all the fucked-up things that happened that there’s an optimism that has to do with the idea that as long as you’re fighting that’s the happy ending. There is no ending but that the happiness the optimism comes with fighting pushing back.”

(l to r.) Tessa Thompson, Lakeith Stanfield, director Boots Riley, and Jermaine Fowler on the set of SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, an Annapurna Pictures release.

Well said Boots, Sorry To Bother You hits select theaters July 6th, and nationwide July 13th. Do yourself a favor and make sure you see this film, we absolutely loved it and definitely think it’s going to garner plenty of Oscar buzz deservingly so.

FLY Review: ‘The First Purge’ Is A Scary Reminder What This Country Could Become

LEX SCOTT DAVIS as Nya in “The First Purge.” Behind every tradition lies a revolution. This Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: “The First Purge.”

The fourth film in the wildly popular Purge franchise serves as a prequel to the previous three films. The Purge: Election Year was assumingly the end of the night of violence disguised as a way for people to “release the beast” but in reality was just a tool for the government to control the population.  As of late, these films feel as if they are right on time regarding the country’s current political climate.

2016’s The Purge: The Election Year dropped right in the middle of the 2016 Presidential Election that featured Donald Trump’s “deplorable” campaign stunningly winning. This year’s The First Purge drops conveniently on July, 4th and features a government scarily similar to the one in charge now but on steroids infused with racism. Franchise writer/director James DeMonaco takes over script duty while Gerard McMurray (Burning Sands) serves as director.

Thanks to the rise of an NRA backed extreme populist political party called the New Founding Fathers who ran on a very pro-America campaign. Sounds very familiar right? The annual night of lawlessness started off as a “simple sociological experiment,” and Staten Island was the testing ground. First introduced by psychologist Dr.Updale (Marisa Tomei) aka The Architect to help push the crime rate down below one percent. The test subjects for this experiment are none other than marginalized Staten Island residents who are offered money if they partake in and survive the night.

Y’LAN NOEL as Dmitri in “The First Purge.” Behind every tradition lies a revolution. This Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: “The First Purge.”

There is a large contingent of people who do sign up for the irresistible offer, but there is a group of anti-purgers led by Nya (Lex Scott Davis) who believe the New Founding Fathers have ulterior motives. Insecure star, Y’lan Noel takes on the role of Dmitri a local drug kingpin who is forced to defend the hood he loves and the people in it when he discovers foul play going on during “social experiment.”

Chief of Staff Patch Darrgh (ARLO SABIAN, far left) alongside the Architect, Dr. Updale (MARISA TOMEI, far right), in “The First Purge.” Behind every tradition lies a revolution. This Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: “The First Purge.”

The First Purge has a new director, but it stays true to the roots that have made the franchise a phenomenon among moviegoers. The action and visuals fans of the franchise have grown accustomed to seeing are all there. Where this film differs from the others is its blaxploitation spin on it. Noel, Davis and Jovian Wade who plays Nya’s immature brother Isaiah all shine in the movie. The movie will stoke emotions as hired militia dressed up in KKK costumes and donning Nazi S.S. uniforms stalk the hallways of Staten Island projects searching for people hiding from the night. But at the same time will get a rise out fans as the black heroes take on the oppressors who are terrorizing their neighborhood.

Final Verdict

Nya (LEX SCOTT DAVIS) and Isaiah (JOIVAN WADE) in “The First Purge.” Behind every tradition lies a revolution. This Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: “The First Purge.”

The First Purge serves as a big middle finger to our current President and will more than like turn Trump supporters away. There are constant digs at Trump including one self-explanatory one that will surely get the crowd hollering. After watching this film, you will definitely walk out of theater impressed with Y’lan Noel who has the makings to be one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars. The First Purge isn’t perfect, there are some head-scratching moments but if you are a fan of this franchise it definitely serves as another solid entry. We definitely think you should add The Fist Purge into your plans for the 4th of July holiday weekend.

They say this is a big, rich town.

It’s been a year, but we finally get to hear Joe croon those sweet words again from our television speakers because Power is back. So here is a quick rundown of last season. The gang is all here, well everyone except for Raina, played by Donshea Hopkins, who gave her life defending her bonehead twin brother in the leaked penultimate episode. Season 4 ended with Riq, played by Michael Rainey Jr., getting revenge on Ray Ray for viciously taking out his sister, parents, and uncle showing up just in the nick of time to cover it all up. When all signs pointed at Dre for being responsible for everything, Ghost, Tommy and Kanan decide to join forces to take out the opportunistic budding drug lord.

So let’s get into season 5, shall we?

FLY Review: ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ Is Nothing Like The First Film & That’s Perfectly Fine

The new Jaegers in action. Photo: Universal Pictures/Legendary Pictures

Pacific Rim: Uprising is nothing like it’s predecessor Pacific Rim and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Guillermo Del Torro downgraded himself to a producer role to focus on The Shape of Water, giving the directing duty to Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus and Netflix’s Daredevil). Charlie Hunnam’s character Raleigh Becket is missing without a trace and there is no mention as to his whereabouts.Ron Perlman’s character Hannibal Chau, the Kaiju organ hoarder is also noticeably absent *shrug*.  Idris Elba is also no longer in the franchise physically and understandably so he gave his life “canceling the apocalypse” in the first film.

So does anything carry over from the first film carry over into this sequel? Well yeah, sort of?

Rinko Kuri’s character Mako returns but her role has been reduced but it’s still very important to the story. Let’s just say she’s following in her adopted father’s footsteps.

Mako (Rinko Kuri) Photo: Universal Pictures/ Legendary Pictures

Our two favorite brilliant but bumbling scientists return to the film. The kaiju groupie Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) and the uptight Gottlieb ( Burn Gorman) are back and add a very unique twist to the film’s story.

The drift returns and is the mental link between two pilots, it’s also known as the Neural Handshake that helps the two pilots control their Jeagers fluidly returns in the film with some upgraded features.

L-R: Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) and Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood) Photo: Universal Pictures/Legendary Studios

The kaiju are back as well but in very limited numbers but there is a perfectly good reason for that.

Now before you gasp at the mere mention of that alone and wonder how in the hell is this film any good?  I will explain eventually.

In the film, it has been 10-years since the events of the first film. The underwater turnstile for the giant monsters known as the breach is still permanently sealed and most of the world has recovered from the damage they cause when they make landfall. Most of the Jaegers in the world have been decommissioned and left to rot sealed off Jaeger scrapyards. The new sci-fi king, John Boyega (The Force Awakens/The Last Jedi) plays Jake Pentecost son of the legendary deceased Jaeger pilot Stacker Pentecost. Instead of fulfilling his once-promising career as a Kaiju destroying Jaeger pilot he opts for a life in the world of the criminal underground. He makes his living off stealing Jaeger parts and selling them on the black market.

During one of his scavenger hunts, he encounters a 15-year-old hacker and Jaeger scrapper named Amara (Cailee Spaeny). When the two go for a joyride in an unauthorized Jaeger she built from all the parts she stole they get arrested. Jake’s adopted sister gives him an Amara a second chance by re-enlisting them in the Pan Pacific Defense Corps’ Jaeger program much to the dismay of the of the by the books no-nonsense ranger Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood).

Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood) Photo: Universal Pictures/Legendary Pictures

Jake reluctantly re-enlist but he takes the job to help Nate train the newest and very young Jaeger pilot recruits including his cellmate at one point Amara. He thinks this is gonna be a quick and easy job and he can be back to life as a scavenger living by his own rules. His plans are quickly changed when a rogue Jaeger makes an appearance by throwing a monkey wrench into plans and forcing him to take being a Jaeger pilot again seriously. Another thorn in the side of the Jaeger program is the introduction of manless drones being created by Liwen Shao (Jing Tian) head of a powerful multinational company.

Now there are plenty of reviews panning this film because Toro is not behind this one but that is honestly also a good thing. Unlike Toro’s film, DeKnight’s sequel is much more fun. When Jake isn’t in a Jaeger he is very witty outside of it and his on-screen chemistry great. Boyega proves he can carry a film as the lead in the film and definitely knows how to squeeze in a joke or two. The other characters in the film do what they are supposed to do but it’s Amara who stands out from the rest of the newcomers easily.

L-R: Amara (Cailee Spaeny), Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) and Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood) Photo: Universal Pictures/Legendary Pictures

But make no mistake the stars of this film are the giant robots and monsters and they shine more than they ever did in the first film. They are even more tricked out than before and doing even more ridiculous things on screen that Jaeger fans dreamed off. From strapping Kaiju blood filled rockets on their back to taking on rogue Jeagers in the middle of the Antarctic, it’s mech vs monster overload and it’s glorious.

The Jaegers Photo: Universal Pictures/Legendary Pictures

This film isn’t intended to blow you away with dialogue or with a mind-blowing story, it’s intended to impress you with its action and it accomplishes that mission very easily. If this movie does well at the box office and all signs point to it doing so,don’t be shocked if there are more movies coming down the pipeline. John Boyega is a star and he deserves his own franchise to shine in, Pacific Rim: Uprising might be the catalyst for future films in this franchise with him leading the charge.

Verdict: Go see it!
