It’s been five years since Janelle Monáe rocked fans with The Electric Lady. Since then, she’s spent much of her time championing for change and flexing her acting chops in huge films (Moonlight and Hidden Figures ring a bell?). On Friday, the multifaceted star announced her forthcoming album, Dirty Computer, and we just…. Sigh. Thank you, Madame Jane.
As of now, details are scarce. If you’ve caught a screening of Black Panther, then you’ve probably seen the album’s accompanying “film narrative,” which is reportedly airing during showings. If not, you can catch a trailer for the “emotion picture” above. Lots to digest here, so watch and listen closely. And keep your eyes peeled for Tessa Thompson‘s cameo. Aaa’oww.
The last few trips ’round the sun have been fruitful for Monáe. The Electric Lady, which debuted at number five on the Billboard 200, sold 47,000 copies and marked her highest debut-week sales yet. Her music video for “Q.U.E.E.N.” won Best Art Direction at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and she was also nominated for the Best R&B/Soul Artist at the Soul Train Awards. These days you can catch her in Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, a sci-fi anthology series based on Dick’s works. She’ll also be alongside Steve Carell as GI Julie in The Women of Marwen, which is currently in post-production.
