Justin Bieber’s life perfectly mocked!
he Lonely Island, the musical satire group composed of Saturday Night Live alums Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone bring their flavor of comedy in the Judd Apatow produced ‘mockumentary’ Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping.
The hilariously fake documentary written by the trio tells the story of the popular boy band hip-hop group The Fly Boyz. They eventually split up when Conner (Andy Samberg) goes solo and becomes “Conner4Real”, Lawrence (Akiva Schaffer) isn’t feeling the move and becomes a reclusive farmer and Owen (Jorma Taccone) goes from being the producer to his Ipod only equipped DJ.
As quickly as things pick up for Conner’s solo career they fall apart with the release of his sophomore album hilarious titled “Connquest”. Things go left fast for him when Conner in one of films hilarious bits featuring Maya Rudolph, makes a deal with an appliance company to have his music obnoxiously blasting from refrigerators and toaster ovens much to the dismay of their owners.
From there Conner’s album goes on to brick hard failing to do the numbers his first album did after critics express their disgust for it. Conner desperately searching for some good reviews about his album reads a positive review from the satirical driven newspaper The Onion not knowing they are making a fool out of him. It doesn’t help the songs are hilariously awful as well. For example Conner releases one song geared towards the legalization of gay marriage (which it already is) and throughout the song he hilariously repeatedly reminds us that he’s ‘not gay”. Another satirical video has Conner taking a swipe at the classic painting The Mona Lisa referring to her as the “original basic bitch”.
With his album not doing a damn thing on the charts Conner’s only hope is the highly anticipated tour. Unfortunately that also tanks thanks to his opening act Hunter the Hungry (Chris Redd) hilarious take on DMX sabotaging one of Conner’s sets causing a disastrous wardrobe malfunction. Now with his tour in shambles, Conner attempts to take the attention away from his tour, he becomes desperate and decides to stage an engagement proposal to his publicity-driven celebrity girlfriend Ashley Wednesday (Imogen Poots) with a live-performance from Seal. It all falls apart when a bunch of wolves ruin everything violently attacking Seal.
With his back against the wall and his career and life falling apart Conner contemplates a reunion with his former Fly Boyz mates to get his life and career back on track.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is one of the year’s better comedies thus far. Samberg put the phone-book in his cell phone to use as the film is heavy with celebrity cameos. Usher, DJ Khaled, Ringo Starr,Simon Cowell, Mariah Carey, Pharrell, NaS, Pink, Carrie Underwood, Adam Levine, Questlove and Michael Bolton all play themselves in the film and each add a hilarious element to mockumentary. Samberg gets great supporting roles out of fellow former SNL cast mates Tim Meadows who plays his manager, Sarah Silverman his publicist, Joan Cusack his drug abusing mom, Bill Hader and Kevin Nealon. Will Arnett hilariously plays an obvious carbon copy of Harvey Levin in a bit called CMZ mocking popular celeb news source TMZ that appears throughout the film.
Popstar is a clever comedy with even its softer jokes being able to get a laugh out of you. If you were always looking for a film that perfectly pokes fun at egotistical and cocky pop-stars this movie is for you.
