So…. what happened to that join Beyonce/Alicia Keys song a few years ago?
Many moons ago, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé recorded a song together for The Element of Freedom called “Put It in a Love Song.” The uptempo track was written and produced by Keys and Swizz Beatz in 2009, for her fourth studio album.
While the single was pushed back to make “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” the album’s debut single, there was a music video filmed for the song. But that’s where things get a bit murky.
Directed by Melina Matsoukas, “Put It in a Love Song” was originally suppose to be filmed in Egypt, but was moved to Brazil where Beyoncé was on tour. According to Terra Musica, it was filmed in two Rio de Janeiro favelas, the Dona Marta Hill and the Conceição Hill where Michael Jackson shot his famous “They Don’t Care About Us” video.
Fans were even more excited about the collaboration when photos from the shoot of the ladies wearing cute Ankara dresses, hit the web.
“Shooting ‘Put It in a Love Song’ in Rio, in Brazil, was very incredible,” Keys told MTV News back in 2010. “I feel that the energy of the city matches the energy of the song. It’s sensual, it’s exciting, it’s so rich with color. I loved it. The people came out so heavy and so hard. I think it was exciting, especially to participate and experience it with them like that. Me and B have a great relationship. And to be able to have the chemistry we have and do it in a city that’s so unique like that is unforgettable. The pictures speak a thousand words. So you saw the energy out there. It was great.”
Despite all the “chemistry,” months went by before it was confirmed that the video would not be released.
Now, six years later and on their sixth studio albums, Keys opened up about what happened to the video, citing that it didn’t highlight the excitement the pair shared.
“We had a ball in the studio, we had a ball doing the video, which was crazy in Brazil, it was outrageous, you saw pictures,” Keys told Rap Radar. “But you know it just didn’t quite, the video didn’t quite capture the energy that I think that we really intended it to and we just felt like it was better to just hold it, so we did that… Maybe one day it will be like some old secret… I’ll put it on Tidal.”
Honestly, it all still sounds a little sketchy. But sometimes what happens behind closed doors, should stay there.
