Following the tragic massacre that took place in San Bernardino, California Wednesday, President Barack Obama is calling for stricter gun laws yet again. During an interview with CBS News, Obama said the level of gun violence within our country in unacceptable and “unparalleled” to other countries. “The one thing we do know is that we have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world,” said Obama. “And there are some steps that we could take — not to eliminate every one of these mass shootings — but to improve the odds that they don’t happen as frequently.” The incident, which took place at a disability facility called Inland Regional Center, is the second mass shooting in the U.S. within a week. Fourteen people lost their lives. Two of the suspects died during a shootout with police officials. Read more.

Entire Police Department in North, SC Quits

After the police chief of North, South Carolina expressed his concerns about the town’s new mayor, the bulk of the police department decided to leave the force. Spending over a decade serving the North community, police chief Mark Fallaw now decided to resign because he didn’t agree with decisions being made by the town’s new mayor Patty Carson – and the entire department followed suit. “For her to be directing procedures that were contrary to national standards, that was going to cause a problem,” said Fallaw in a statement. “So I just said it was best for me probably to step down. We’ve given them a 60% reduction in violent crime and a 30% in property crimes and I’d love to continue that. I just fear that because of the way this panned out, that they’re going to go in reverse now.” Since there aren’t any police officials to patrol the town, the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office has stepped in. Case Shows Traditionally White Colleges in Maryland Duplicated HBCU Programs to Receive More Money

A case in Maryland is pushing the state to invest more in the development of programs at historically Black colleges and universities. The Coalition for Equity and Excellence came out victorious in a lawsuit against the Maryland Higher Education Commission. During the case, the judge discovered that traditionally White institutions replicated HBCU programs to receive more funding. “Specifically she indicated in her ruling that Maryland continues to operate a dual system of higher education in which unnecessary academic program duplication is widespread,” said David Burton, President of the Coalition for Equity and Excellence. “The fact that the HBIs only have eleven unique and high-demand academic programs compared to 122 at traditionally white institutions, otherwise known as TWIs. And three, rather than dismantle the [du jour] error of program duplication that facilitated segregation in the first place, the state of Maryland has maintained policies and practices that has exacerbated the duplication that facilitated segregation in the first place.” Read more.
