Actor Taye Diggs has responded to backlash over comments he made about his son’s biracial identity, suggesting he didn’t want the general public to label his son Black due to his mixed heritage.

While promoting his children’s book, Mixed Me, the Broadway actor told The Grio he wants his son Walker to respect his mother Idina Menzel’s Jewish heritage. His comments took a turn for the worse when he said he “feared” people would see his son as Black, the way many view President Barack Obama.

Critics claimed the actor wanted his son to denounce his Blackness.

Diggs posted his reaction to the furor on Instagram, saying his son will embrace his roots the way he chooses.

Speaking with TMZ Live, Diggs then switched his tone, saying he wants his son to be proud of who he is. When asked how would he feel if Walker wanted to identify as White, he said, “good luck with that.”

Diggs’ book Mixed Me is available on Amazon and other popular retailers.
