This past weekend, the stars of STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON: Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, and O’Shea Jackson Jr., Executive Producer Ice Cube, Director F. Gary Gray, and legendary N.W.A member DJ Yella held a press conference in Los Angeles to discuss the making of the film.
Gary Gray tasked the cast with not only portraying their character on screen, but essentially becoming these legendary artists:
“I just filled him [O’Shea Jackson, Jr.] up with ammunition. He would have everything he needed to understand how I felt during that time,” said Ice Cube on his son’s portrayal of him in the film.
Gary Gray touched on the intense amount of work the cast had to go through to become the legendary members of N.W.A. The talented Jason Mitchell, who plays Eazy-E in the film, talked to how this experience is the job of a lifetime and how happy he is to bring life to the fallen gangsta rap icon:
“The second to last week of shooting was called the Eazy week. By that time, we had built up a brotherhood so strong, that when they saw me laying in that [hospital] bed, they weren’t seeing Eazy, they were seeing Jason,” said Jason Mitchell on the bond the cast shares.
The cast has developed a brotherhood that translates on screen as we journey through the years of N.W.A Make sure to catch STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON in theaters August 14th!
