FLY-Lights: LAUSD and Nick Cannon Host Largest H.S. & Middle School Talent Show

On this past Saturday, Los Angeles Unified School District‘s (LAUSD) “Beyond the Bell” branch and special partner Nick Cannon’s Celebrity High presented their 5th annual “Spotlight on Success.” Over 3,000 students from 44 high schools and 12 middle schools were in attendance at Paramount Studios NY set.

Celebrity guests included Nick Cannon, OMG Girlz, 4 Count, and more. All of the schools gathered for the largest high school and middle school talent competition in the nation.

The annual event also included a musical performance by OMG Girlz and 4 Count.

The event gives the students of LAUSD an opportunity to share their best through song, dance, spoken word, deejaying, visual arts and media projects in a celebratory high spirited competition. Students lunched on Chipotle, Subway, and California Chicken Cafe while enjoying their fellow classmates’ performances. Over a dozen high school students from across Los Angeles received scholarships totaling over $30,000 which were provided by New York Film Academy, Air Force Association, Carson Foundation and the Los Angeles Rotary Club.

This week, MTVU’s Random Acts, teamed up with Usher, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Nick Cannon and Darren Criss to surprise several worthy students across the country with a kind gesture to celebrate the end of the school year. Starting today, May 6, and premiering throughout that week, MTV, MTV2 and mtvU will air segments in which hardworking, civic-minded students are surprised with appearances, grants and gifts from the networks and some of the biggest celebrities in pop culture. Each segment will premiere on MTV during the 4 p.m. ET/PT hour and subsequently run on MTV2 and mtvU.

The week begins today at Howard University, with Usher and MTV’s Sway Calloway astonishing student Corey Arvinger with a $12,000 check to pay off his debt and get him back to school. The funds are provided by mtvU and SALT, a free resource that helps college students and recent alumni break down the overwhelming world of student debt and take charge of their finances. Additionally, Howard University agreed to match the donation with another check for $12,000 to further his education, as part of the University’s ‘Bridging the Gap Student Campaign.’ Arvinger had been working two jobs at home while trying to raise tuition money by crowdsourcing small donations online.

Basketball Wives: LA star, Laura Govan (who has lost over 100 pounds recently after giving birth to her fourth child), showed up on the blue carpet of VH1′s Do Something Awards with a new body over the weekend. Clad in a revealing snakeskin number, she looked pretty good.

Mrs. Jennifer Lopez’s was spotted at Vegas Pure Night Club in a Blue Strapless Dress and Christian Louboutin Lady Peep Toe Python Pumps. I’m normally on team Lopez, but the hem of this dress bothers me a bit much. Rush job much?

Nick Cannon was spotted over the weekend at the 2012 Do Something Awards as well, rocking a three piece gray suit, Cannon looked dapper as usual.

Hip-Hop’s newest rookie, A$AP Rocky, instagrammed a pic of himself laid back in a chair with his feet propped up on a table, clad in Balmain denim biker jeans, and Maison Martin Margiela 22 Velcro strap high-top sneakers.

Ciara was spotted out and about in Los Angeles, clad in boy shorts and combat boots. I’m patiently waiting for this music tho …

And 2 Chainz performed at the Nokia Theatre L.A. recently, Rockin 2 Chainz, 2 Bracelets, 2 Rings and 2 Chain belts.

Last Night In NYC…Nick Cannon took over the turntables at the 2011 YRB Magazine Fall Fashion Issue Release Party held at NY’s Kiss & Fly.

For those that didn’t know, Nick is the cover model for the fall issue, which hits stands on October 7th. So to celebrate, Nick powered up some good tunes throughout the night.

The event was indeed a successful one and drinks were on deck that was provided by GIVEN Liqueur! #GoodTimes
