I’ll be the last person to say that Taylor Swift is irrelevant. I’d also be lying if I said I never heard of her. I definitely have, and I know a few singles when I hear it.

She’s been on the scene, doing incredible numbers (in the present record industry) for a while now.

In 2006, she released her debut single “Tim McGraw“, then her self-titled debut album, which was subsequently certified Platinumseveral times by the Recording Industry Association of America. In November 2008, Swift released her second album, Fearless.Fearless and Taylor Swift finished 2008 at number three and number six respectively, with sales of 2.1 and 1.5 million.[5] Fearlesshas topped the Billboard 200 in 11 non-consecutive weeks;[6] no album has spent more time at No. 1 since 2000.

However, On September 14, 2009 Kanye West made Taylor Swift relevant to his Audience, when he interrupted her acceptance speech to tell the World what he though of her beating out Beyonce for best Video of the Year.

Since then, everyone knows who Taylor Swift is, they may not be able to sing her songs but they know she’s the girl Kanye interrupted. Thus propelling a combination of awareness, recognition and sympathy. When she beat Lady Gaga, and Beyonce for Album of the Year at the Grammy’s all I could say is, She should thank Kanye. Not down playing her talent or success, just saying it’s been enhanced.

Some of you may argue that, I din’t know much about her but many people did. That’s my point.

*shots fired* You ain’t neva lie, Rae! Taylor should have thanked ‘Ye in her acceptance speech. He really did a lot for her career. People like me barely knew who she was before the Kanye fiasco.

Wait, I’m confused. I usually would never write a comment but I must weigh in on this one. Taylor won album of the year and you think she should thank Kanye? For what exactly. Kanye West made Taylor more know to Kanyes audience. Primarily black people. That buy no means made Taylor more relevant to the audience that she already had.

I’m basically confused at how you are trying to link the exposure that Kanye gave to Taylor, to the success or talent that she has. Rather Kanye pulled his little stunt or not, I thought that we should ALL be able to agree that Taylor would have still won that award. I even want to take a leap to say she would have still sold the same amount of records as well.

For the record: Taylor Swift is NOT irrelevant. I think your basing that assumption off the fact the your group of friends and you didnt know who she was. But keep in mind that irrelevant people dont go double platinum.

Maybe you should read the first sentence; “I’ll be the last person to say that Taylor Swift is irrelevant.” Or maybe you missed the brief description of her accomplishments that was given in this post. FYI, My friends did not write the post, I did. I don’t know WHO told you that kanye’s audience is “Black” but it’s more diverse then that. That’s like saying Taylor Swift’s audience is plain “White” which is not the case. My point is clearly written, if you agree to disagree that’s excellent. But don’t put words in my mouth.

I understand your point, but please understand that you almost contradict yourself. You say that “your the last person to say that Taylor Swift is irrelevant” but you feel that Kanye “enhanced” he career in a sense and she should have thanked him. Exactly why should she thank Kanye after she beat out Beyonce and Gaga? Kanye did nothing for Taylors career but make her face known. When she now comes on TV people can now put a face with the name, this does not mean people rushed out to buy her album to make it Album of the Year. Taylors album sales did not sky rocket or even fluctuated after Kanyes stunt at the VMA’s.

Oh and is Kanye’s audience primarily black, no, but in respect to ratios, then yes it is. His audience will always be primarily white because of course there are more white people, but in respects to ratios, Kanye’s audience is “primarily” black and Taylors is white.

Kanye’s audience is very diverse and we are talking about indirect effects here and not direct. Taylor received indirect benefits from the Kanye interruption. People (White/Black/Red/ etc.) wanted to find out who she was on Twitter when the MTV thing went down. I do believe that a subliminal message was being sent. Hey anyone ban Joe Wilson as long as they have banned Kanye?

I see your point, however I still stick to mine. We can agree to disagree. I appreciate your comment and opinion, and hope that you comment more in the future. Thanks for reading SFPL!

Kanye definitely gave Taylor some media Coverage she would NOT have normally received. People definitely LOVE her more now that she was a Victim. VOTING boards included.

Bottom line is…in my fab opinion, That TRICK shouldn’t have won ALBUM OF THE YEAR. GAGA should have took that…and if not then my girl B should have.
