Racial Discrimination Against Six Black Students at Mother’s Bar in Chicago
- With 4 comments
(Regis Murayi, right, is seen after he got rejected by a bar over his jeans, and Jordan Roberts wears Regis’ jeans inside the bar.)
Our avid readers from Washington University in St. Louis sent this story over to us, in concerns of a recent racial discrimination case that is going on in Chicago at a local bar called “Mother’s Bar”. Once reading the story, we here at SFPL were appalled and slightly angry at the fact this type of negativity still carries on.
Check out more of this story after the jump….
Six of my friends at WashU experienced a despicable act of racial discrimination about a week ago in Chicago. Six black males and about 200 of their peers went on Washington University in St. Louis’s senior class trip to Chicago. On the evening of 10/17/09, the group went to Mother’s Bar and the bouncers denied entrance to all six of the African-American males. Their justification? The bar managers claimed that the boys were wearing “baggy jeans” that violated the establishment’s dress code. Regis Murayi, one of the banned students and treasurer of the Senior Class Council, did an experiment to see if the bouncers were really trying to regulate the dress code or if they were indeed racists. Regis went back to the hotel that the group was staying at and switched jeans with a white student, Jordan, who is about 3 inches shorter and 30-40lbs lighter than him. Jordan went back to the bar and was allowed in. If you look at the pictures, the jeans are quite baggy on Jordan! Please post the following articles from Student Life, our campus newspaper, and CNN.com for details about the story and the experiment the boys did to prove that this was an issue of racial discriminaton and not a mere dress code violation.

We wanna thank the students of Washington Louis for sending this story over to us. Racism must come to end and something needs to be done about it.
What are your thoughts on this particular issue? Should we just walk away? Or should we take positive action and bring this issue to the light?
Share your thoughts with us!

It’s appalling that things like this are still taking place. But I must say, I’m very proud at how these young brothers are handling the situation. I thought it was ingenious of them to swap clothes with the white student. Because now what can that establishment use to justify their behavior? Nothing. Blatant racism and bigotry. Thanks for this post…

I mean YES THIS IS RIDICULOUS! But what are people going to do? Fire the bouncers? Close the bar down? (probably not). These things piss me off, but there’s almost nothing we can do about it but spread the word that ignorance still exists!

shit like this makes me really want to not like white ppl but i know not all of them are racist but dammit it seems as if the majortiy are. something has to be done but it like no matter what it will continue to be a problem that blk ppl will ALWAYS have to face, i feel one of the biggest things as black people can do is keep our heads up and fight the negative off with our positivity…

Wow… I wish I could say I am suprised that happened, but I’m more suprised it took so long for something like that to get national attention. I have worked in bars/restaurants for about 8 years and there have always been very calculated procedures to keep black people away. From not carrying certain drinks (heineken, cognacs, frozen drinks, nuvo, etc) or over charging for those drinks, to the ever popular “dress code” bs, or directing the bouncers “don’t let it get too dark in here tonight”. At one bar i worked at, i was the only employee that would serve black folks. It might be magnified because I live and work in Atlanta, but im sad to say this is nothing new. To be clear, I am certainly NOT advocating this behavior, just thought I might give you a little behind the scenes info.
RICHIERob…$- all white people aren’t racist. Some, but not all. I promise
