Looks like Katy Perry wanted to bring a little hallelujah praise back with a classic hat that was the talk of the nation a few years ago.
When singer Aretha Franklin stepped out to sing “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” for President Barack Obama’s first inauguration in 2009, it wasn’t her performance that stole the show, but instead it was her over-sized grey bow hat that became the most-talked about accessory of the event.
Singer Katy Perry decided to revive the infamous hat for Obama’s second inauguration by showing off a tiny Aretha bow hat on top of her black floppy Fedora.
The “Teenage Queen” singer tweeted a picture of the miniature grey and bejeweled prop yesterday on her account:
Arm in arm with boyfriend and singer John Mayer, Perry told People magazine that she had the tiny hat custom-made for the event.
“I had it made. I thought it would be fun to do a shout-out back to four years ago,” she told People.
Franklin’s hat from 2009 has taken a life of its own on the Internet. A meme titled “Aretha’s Hat” features a series of photos of the hat superimposed onto the heads of variety of subjects.
Additionally, a Facebook page called “Aretha Franklin’s Inauguration Hat” has strong fan-following with almost 100,000 likes.
