Everyone has dreams and ambitions in life, but only a select few can clearly see the true vision of their dreams and make them a reality. Memphis native Steven Christopher had a dream to become one of the top entertainers in the music world. With creative energy shown through his vocals, charismatic personality, focused work ethic and a creative blend of hip hop, R&B, and soul, 22 year old Steven Christopher’s unique sound is one that will make you remember who he is.
Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Steven had a love for music at a very young age.
“Growin’ up, I heard music all the time. My mom would play the Jackson 5, Earth Wind and Fire and I couldn’t get away from Al Green songs if I tried! It made me appreciate old school r&b and eventually I began mimicking what I’d hear, tryin’ to sound like those singers. I don’t know, somethin’ just clicked. I was obsessed with how music could control emotions and make u feel things. From then on, it was a wrap. Music was all I cared about and I knew it was what I wanted to do.”
Working with some of the top producers in the business, including Chuck Harmony, Kendrick “Wyldcard” Dean, Kwame and others, traveling back and forth to L.A. and NYC, the work began to pay off.
“I got to Atlanta, and have no idea how but ended up around the right people. At that point it was grind or go home. I didn’t care about anything but making music. I’m sure everybody was probably thinking ‘Who’s this skinny kid and why won’t he leave the studio?’ I just always tried my hardest and thankfully people saw something in me.”
Steven found a mentor, after being thrown into a sink or swim situation, in then, an up and coming producer Shama “Sak Pase” Joseph (Rihanna “Man Down”, Jay-Z & Kanye West “Who Gon Stop Me”).
“Sham was the first producer I ever had a in-studio writing session with; before that I’d just write at home and bring the song in to demo. I was scared as shit but somehow we made the biggest song I think I’ve ever written and it kept going, song after song. He and I developed this crazy musical chemistry and he became a mentor to me like a big brother. Sham was the first person I went to when i decided to start workin’ on my own music.”
Fast forward two years and Steven Christopher is ready to release his first solo project, HeartbreakSexDreams; a 12 song EP Co-Executive Produced by Shama “Sak Pase” Joseph.
“It’s pretty much my take on love and relationships. I wrote every song beginning to end, based on real personal experiences so it’s almost painfully honest. Once people get pass the beats and melodies they’re like ‘Damn this shit is deep, I been through the same thing!’ I think everybody’s been at a point where a relationship’s driven them to drink a time or two!”
Musically, HeartbreakSexDreams easily walks the line between what’s new and classic. It mixes hard-hitting yet atmospheric tracks like “Better” with nods to the 80′s and 90′s quiet storm like “Right Now” and the Shama Joseph-produced “Love You Down”; one of a number of tracks featuring live instrumentation.
“I think the project shows my duality as an artist; I’m a huge fan of Kanye West and Usher but am heavily influenced by artists like Prince and The Isley Brothers. I had to figure out how to incorporate both sides of the spectrum because both make me who I am. I think we did it.”
The first single “Better” produced by RicoBeats (Soulja Boy) is a story of love ended but not forgotten. Steven Christopher taunts his ex with the hook’s lead line “Once you’ve had the best, so hard to find Better”; the words, his honesty, undeniably relatable.
“Distant Lover” serves as HeartbreakSexDreams’ follow up single.
